Master of Science DegreeThe master's degree will be granted to degree candidates who complete a program of studies approved by a faculty adviser in the major department. The program must include no less than 45 quarter hours. Students can elect to fulfill 9 of the 45 quarter units by completing a thesis, but the thesis choice is optional. In addition, a 3.0 cumulative GPA (B average) must be earned in all course work taken at Santa Clara University. Residence requirements of the University are met by completing 36 quarter hours of the graduate program at Santa Clara University. A maximum of 9 quarter units (6 semester units) may be transferred from other accredited institutions at the discretion of the student's adviser. All units applied toward the degree, including those transferred from other institutions, must be earned within a six-year period. Prospective graduate students often express interest in pursuing a M.S. degree in a field not exactly related to what they have studied for their bachelor's degree. At Santa Clara University, all prospective students with a technical degree are encouraged to apply. In many cases, the engineering graduate programs will accept students whose bachelor's degree is not in an engineering-related field but whose undergraduate transcripts exhibit the potential for success in graduate school.
