Space Systems (Kitts)

This program supports four different MS degree programs, one of which is in Mechanical Engineering. The Mechanical Engineering option is based on the Robotics and Mechatronics depth area, with additional requirements that include a core course sequence in Space Systems Design and Engineering as well as a variety of courses in Project Management and Systems Engineering.

The program of studies for the space systems degree option must include the following courses:

  • MECH 371 Space Systems Design and Engineering I (4 units)
  • MECH 372 Space Systems Design and Engineering II (4 units)
  • EMGT 380 Introduction to Systems Engineering (2 units)
  • EMGT 381 System Conceptual Design (2 units)
  • EMGT 330 Project Management Basics (2 units)
  • EMGT 335 Advanced Project Management and Leadership (2 units)
  • MECH 202 (or 200 & 201) Mathematical Methods in Mech. Engineering (4 units)
  • MECH 207 Advanced Mechatronics I (3 units)
  • MECH 208 Advanced Mechatronics II (3 units)
  • MECH 337 Robotics I (2 units)
  • MECH 338 Robotics II (2 units)
  • MECH 290 or 299 (2 units min)

Students must also take elective courses to satisfy the following requirements:

  • 4 additional units of mathematics (approved by advisor)
  • 4 units of control systems (approved by advisor)
  • 2 units from the Engineering and Society list of approved graduate core courses
  • 3 additional units approved by your advisor

Note that the Emerging Topics and the Engineering and Business/Entrepreneurship course requirements are satisfied by other required courses in the depth area (e.g., MECH 371/371 satisfy the Emerging Topics requirement, and EMGT 380/381/330/265 fulfill the Engineering and Business/Entrepreneurship requirement).
