Opportunities for Alumni

Dear Alumni:

John Baldwin

One of the more enjoyable aspects of my six-plus years working in Development and Alumni Relations at the School of Law has been the opportunity to meet and get to know a very interesting and diverse group of law alumni.

In that time, this department, in concert with a number of faculty, staff, and members of the alumni board, has made a concerted effort to reach out to alumni, seeking to get as many as possible re-connected to the school.

Whether through face-to-face visits, local and regional alumni gatherings, or by bringing alumni to events on campus, this effort has been very successful in terms of your response.

SCU School of Law alumni seem to enjoy opportunities provided to network with other alumni, to catch up with friends, classmates, and faculty, and to get up-to-date information as to what is happening at the school.

But most of all, alumni tell us they relish the opportunity to interact with current students, whether it’s through the Alumni/Student Dinner Program, Law Career Day, brown bag lunches with student groups, applicant receptions, or regional alumni gatherings. For those of you who are interested in the opportunity to work with students, especially in assisting them as they make the transition from student to practicing attorney, the office of Law Career Services, in conjunction with Law Alumni Relations and the Law Alumni Board, has created a new channel to engage alumni and friends of the School of Law: the Post- Graduate Clerkship Program.

The program will help match participating employers with recent SCU law graduates who are interested in securing temporary employment after sitting for the California Bar Examination in July. Such employment would be in the form of legal clerkships with law firms, corporations and other organizations, as opposed to the traditional post-graduate judicial clerkships that are already available through other avenues. These non-judicial clerkships would have a suggested start date in September or October and run for a suggested term of 6 months.

If you would like to participate in this wonderful opportunity to assist students and to support the School of Law, please contact Matthew Wayman ’97, assistant director of law graduate employment, at 408-554-4162, or by e-mail at wwayman@scu.edu.

Sincerely,

JOHN BALDWIN
Assistant Dean for Development
