Staying Connected

This school year marks the 65th anniversary of the Santa Clara University School of Law’s alumni association, in one form or another. From the creation of the Santa Clara Law Society in 1939 to the present-day workings of the Law Alumni Board, the alumni association’s primary objective has been to maintain and enhance connections—between alumni and the school, between the alumni themselves, and between alumni and current law students.

As the law school’s alumni rolls have grown and many of the school’s graduates migrate far beyond the Bay Area, maintaining and enhancing those connections has presented a challenge and an opportunity for the Law Alumni Board. As a result, the board has chosen to grow both numerically and geographically. For several years the board consisted of no more than 17 directors and, with rare exception, those directors came exclusively from the Santa Clara Valley. However, this past July the board’s by-laws were amended, allowing for up to 30 directors, and, it was decided the board would reach far beyond the Bay Area to involve those alums who wish to stay connected to the law school and their respective classmates, regardless of where they reside. Twelve new members have joined the board this year, bringing the total number of directors to 26. Through the beauty of modern technology the board has not only practically doubled the number of its active directors, but four of our new members hail from the distant climes of Los Angeles, Reno, Nev., Portland, Ore., and Moline, Ill.
