There Are Many Ways to Lead

As this year’s Law Alumni Board President and a dual-alumnus (engineer ing and law) of SCU, I have spent more than a few years on campus. In that time I have had the privilege of learning about leadership from many members of the SCU community. And that learning builds on the Jesuit tradition of critical reasoning with a strong moral base to accomplish all that we do.

Leadership is the focus of this issue of the magazine. But what is leadership? Is it amassing a group of people and directing their actions? Is it identifying some objective and clearly communicating to others the way of achieving it? Is it recognizing an unmet need and working to fulfill it? Or is it simply being a good example for others to follow? Clearly, leader ship is all of these things—there are many ways to lead.

Leadership is evident in the activities and successes of the recipients of this year’s Owens Lawyer of the Year and Alumni Special Achievement Awards, which will be presented at the annual Spring Awards Banquet. These alumni honorees lead in business, public service, and in the community.

Leadership is evident in the past and continued activities of retired California Supreme Court Justice, Edward A. Panelli B.S. ’53, J.D. ’55. Justice Panelli has an active mediation docket and also supports the law school in numerous ways. One such event is the annual Justice Panelli Golf Classic, a golf outing held locally each year to raise scholarship funds. I highly recommend this fun event as a great way to reconnect with fellow alums and local practitioners while helping current and future students. The Justice Panelli Golf Classic will be held at the San Jose Country Club on June 25.

Leadership was also evident in the law school’s very successful capi tal campaign, co-chaired by Justice Panelli and Daniel J. Kelly ’69, with strong support from Dean Donald J. Polden and the Alumni Office. (Visit "Campaign Report" for a full report.) While the campaign has concluded, numerous tasks remain, requiring continued contributions and leadership.

I would like to thank each and every alum for your contributions to and involvement with Santa Clara Law. We have the great fortune to be a part of the Santa Clara Law family and benefit from its continued successes and ever-improving reputation. Please consider how you might expand your experience of leadership by increasing your involvement.

I look forward to seeing you at the Spring Awards Banquet, at the Justice Panelli Golf Classic, and around campus.

Best regards,

V. RANDALL "RANDY" GARD B.S. ’81, J.D. ’90
Law Alumni Board President, 2006-07
