Billy Joe Cougill, Sept. 12, 2007. He joined the army at 17, serving in Germany. While putting himself through college and supporting a family, he served as a Santa Clara County sheriff's deputy. As an attorney, he represented clients regardless of their ability to pay, and accepted such unusual payments as car repairs, furniture and, to his wife Anita's chagrin, an Appaloosa horse. He was a convert to Catholicism, and active in support of the church. He was a member of the SIRS and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed debating politics, golf, deep-sea fishing and hunting. He is survived by his mother, two children, and six grandchildren.

Elmira McCabe Gearhart, Oct. 15, 2007. She attended law school at age 45, and then was in private practice until 1979, when she moved to Alabama. There, she was law professor at the Cumberland Law School in Birmingham for five years. Spending summers in Maine and winters in Alabama, she worked for the Maine Domestic Court as a mediator, and also hosted a Maine PBS show “Look Who's Cooking.” She is survived by a son, two daughters, and 14 grandchildren.

Philip James Englund, March 8, 2007. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Sandra, three children, and four grandchildren.

Hon. Alan E. Ellis, July 4, 2007. He was a retired superior court judge and longtime farmer-rancher in Indian Valley, Idaho. As a young man, he was a student of Ansel Adams and held a lifelong passion for photography. His varied careers included being a sheriff, horse-logger, writer, photographer, educator, dairyman, hay farmer and city manager. He received his undergraduate degree from UCLA. He is survived by his wife, Kathy Woltring O'Neill, three sons, a brother, and two grandchildren.

Nancy Carlin, July 8, 2007. She worked for LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & Macrae in San Francisco for 17 years. She is survived by a brother.

David A. Hardin, April 19, 2007. A native of Texas, he was a criminal defense attorney in San Jose for 24 years. He is survived by his wife, Betsy Gebhart, and three children.
