Blog, Tweet, and Post: Proceed With Caution

Social media can pose problems for government officials.  Center Senior Fellow in Government Ethics Judy Nadler outlines some of the pitfalls in an article for the National Conference of State Legislatures.  Nadler offers two brief case studies and then offers these general principles:

  • New media should be used to improve rather than restrict access for the public.
  • While efforts should be made to moderate extreme rhetoric, the public does have a right to know about comments made on blogs.
  • Officeholders should choose their words prudently.
