Ryan F. Holmes
Ryan F. Holmes is the coordinator and faculty of record for the Health Care Ethics Internship, a program that sends SCU students to hospital and hospice settings and offers them the opportunity to observe and reflect on ethical issues in the medical field. His other responsibilities include ethics consultation and policy development with the Center's partners: O'Connor Hospital in San Jose, Seton Medical Center in Daly City, St. Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy, and Hospice of the Valley.
While focusing primarily on end-of-life issues, Holmes has lectured and written on a variety of topics, including ethics education, decision-making for pediatric patients, and medically ineffective treatment. His current research is a review and critique of medical futility and medically ineffective treatment. He is particularly interested in consensus, deliberative decision-making, and the political philosophy that underpins these processes.
Holmes is currently pursuing a doctorate in Health Care Ethics from Saint Louis University. He holds Master's degrees in Education from the University of Michigan and Bioethics from Case Western University, and a bachelor's degree in Human and Organizational Development (HOD) and Philosophy from Vanderbilt University. He completed his fellowship in Clinical Ethics at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
