Access, Internet, and Public Libraries

Santa Clara County's Library system is currently addressing the issue of minors' access to the Internet. The key question facing the library and its governing body is how minors should be guided in their access to the Internet in public libraries.

The Markkula Center for Applied Ethics will listen carefully to the key stakeholders in two "focused discussions" (especially those members of the public who tend to favor limited Internet access for minors and those who tend to favor open access). Our purpose is to be sure each perspective is heard clearly and reported accurately, to explore the solutions that might be acceptable to each stakeholder group, to determine if there are any new ways of thinking about the issue and its possible solutions, and to identify any areas of common ground shared by the various positions on this issue. Join us for one of the following focused discussions, if you share the opinion being voiced in the "focused discussion":

These two meetings are not a place for public debate or disagreement. For more information on the "focused discussions" contact a librarian for a detailed letter about the event or the Center. The Center can be reached by Phone at (408) 554-5319 or by fax (408) 554-2373 to reserve a place at the event. You may also fill out our Feedback Form.
