2008-09 Season

Overview

Santa Clara student-athletes achieved much individual success in 2008–09.



Highlights include SCU’s first female Rhode Scholar Award winner Noelle Lopez, cross country and track team captain; West Coast Conference (WCC) Player of the Year John Bryant and WCC Freshman of the Year Kevin Foster, both for men’s basketball; the Broncos’ first women’s golfer to qualify for the NCAA Regionals, Miki Ueoka; and SCU’s third WCC postgraduate scholarship recipient Elizabeth Doran, for women’s basketball.



Bronco student-athletes also raised their cumulative grade point average to a 3.114 following the winter quarter and posted a record-high 3.15 spring quarter GPA. Continuing to shine academically, 126 Santa Clara University student-athletes made Commissioner’s Honor Roll lists this year, including 97 on the WCC Honor Roll, 15 on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) list, and 14 on the Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) list.

2007–08 Season

Overview


Santa Clara finished as the West Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup runner-up in 2007–08. Along with winning the Cup twice, in 2004–05 and 2006–07, Santa Clara has finished runner-up five times in the Cup’s seven years of existence. For his work, Santa Clara athletic director Dan Coonan has been named to the San Jose Mercury News’ Top 25 Most Powerful People in Sports in the Bay Area for the second time in the past three years.

Bronco student-athletes raised their cumulative grade point average to 3.025 following the 2008 spring quarter.

In the spring term alone, SCU student-athletes com¬piled a 3.08 GPA, which matches the previous single term high from Spring 2005. Continuing to shine academi¬cally, 79 Santa Clara University student-athletes made Commissioner’s Honor Roll lists this year, including 68 on the WCC Honor Roll and 11 on the Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) list. The women’s golf team finished No. 4 and the women’s water polo team finished No. 7 nationally with their team GPAs; and individually, Mitch Henke won the WCC’s Postgraduate Scholarship.

2006–07 Season

  • In 2007, the Broncos captured the West Coast Conference Commissioner's Cup for the second time in three years after nine top-four finishes in 13 WCC-sponsored sports during the 2006–07 seasons.
  • For four straight years, an NCAA report showed that student-athletes at SCU graduate at the highest rate (76 percent) in the WCC (West Coast Conference) and at the second highest rate among Division I institutions in California
  • In 2006, Bronco student-athletes have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.046. The overall student-athlete term grade-point average was 3.095. Women’s golf led all teams with an overall term grade-point average of 3.525.
Baseball:
  • Tied for fourth at the WCC, enabling SCU to clinch the Commissioner’s Cup.
  • Tommy Medica was named All-WCC First Team and to the All-WCC Freshman Team, Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, All-Ping! Freshman Team, Baseball Freshman All-American, Team USE roster for summer tour and Pan Am Games.
  • Steve Kalush and Nate Garica were named to the All-Freshman Team.
  • Gabe Alcanter, Matt Wickswat, and Ryan Conan were named All-WCC Honorable Mentions.
  • Carl Bacon and Jeff Lombard were named WCC Spring All-Americans.
Men’s Basketball:
  • Finished second in WCC for first time under coach Dick Davey.
  • 21 wins were most ever during Davey’s tenure.
  • Dick Davey named WCC Coach of the Year for the fourth time.
  • Sean Denison named WCC Co-Player of the Year, USBWA All-District IX, AP All-American Honorable Mention, Collegeinsider.com WCC Player of the Year; and he earned a spot in the DiGiorno Senior All-Star Game at the Final Four.
  • Scott Dougherty and Danny Pariseau were named to the All-WCC First Team; Pariseau was also named WCC Newcomer of the Year.
  • Brody Angley named All-WCC Honorable Mention.
  • Mitch Henke named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District, WCC All-Academic, I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete First Team, and WCC All-Academic.
  • Danny Pariseau and Joey Kaemph were also named WCC All-Academics.
Women’s Basketball:
  • Finished sixth in regular season.
  • Chandice Cronk named All-WCC First Team.
  • Jen Gottschalk named All-WCC Honorable Mention.
  • Ashley Grahm named WCC All-Academic and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII.
  • Tied for first in nation in three-pointers rate with at 8.4 per game.
Men’s Cross Country:
  • Finished third at the WCC Championships in Belmont, Calif .
  • Placed 20th at the NCAA West Regionals in Fairview , Ore .
  • Chris Gumbs named All-WCC First Team after finishing sixth.
  • Mike Hannon named All-WCC Honorable Mention after finishing thirteenth.
  • A.J. Blummel named WCC All-Academic.
Women’s Cross Country:
  • Finished fourth at the WCC Championships in Belmont, Calif .
  • Placed 18th at the NCAA West Regionals in Stanford, Calif.
  • Shannon Bell named ESPN The Magazine All-District VIII, All-American and WCC All-Academic.
  • Lauren Swigart named All-WCC Honorable Mention, finishing twelfth at SCC Championships.
  • Anne Murphy-Hagan named All-WCC Honorable Mention, finishing thirteenth at WCC Championships.
Men’s Golf:
  • Finished in a tie for fifth at the WCC Championships in Lompoc , Cali f.
  • Jong Yoon was top finisher at WCC Championships, placing eighth and earning All-WCC honors.
  • Tim Lynch finished 17th at WCC Championships.
Women’s Golf:
  • Finished fourth at the WCC Championships in Lompoc , Calif.
  • Jamie Nonaka was top Bronco at WCCs with a tenth-place finish.
  • Jamie Nonaka, Hilaire Fouts, and Samantha Trask were all named All-WCC Honorable Mentions.
  • Hilare Fouts and Corey Utsurogi named WCC Spring All-Academics.
  • Hilare Fouts, Jamie Nonaka, Jennifer Sun, Megan Stoddart, and Erin Sullivan named NCGA Division 1 All-American Scholars.
Men’s Rowing:
  • Finished fourth at Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships.
  • Third-place finish at Lexington Cup.
Women’s Rowing:
  • Equaled program-best with second-place finish at WCC Championsip.
  • Finished second in JV eight and third in IVs at WCCs.
  • Katie Faher and Ashley Tomberlin named All-WCC First Team.
  • Finished second at Lexington Cup.
  • Earned fourth place finish at Dad Vail Regatta and sent two boats to race.
  • Finished eighth at WIRA Championships.
Men’s Soccer:
  • Won ninth WCC title.
  • Reached quarterfinals of NCAA Tournament.
  • Cameron Rast named WCC Coach of the Year.
  • Keith DeVey named All-WCC First Team, All-Far West Region Third Team, NSCAA Scholar All-Far West Region First Team, and NSCAA Scholar All-American Third Team.
  • Peter Lowry named All-WCC Second Team, All-Far West Region First Team.
  • Matt Hatzke named All-WCC Honorable Mention, ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII, Scholar All-Far West Region Honorable Mention, and WCC All-Academic.
  • Eric Ustruck named All-WCC Second Team.
  • Stephen McCarthy named WCC Co-Freshman of the Year, All-WCC Honorable Mention, Soccer American All-Freshman Team, College Soccer News All-Freshman Team, and WCC All-Freshman Team.
  • Jide Ogunbiyi, Joseph Buttitta, and Brian Martin were All-WCC Honorable Mentions.
  • Jamil Roberts named All-WCC Honorable Mention and All-Far West Region Third Team.
  • Jeff Cosgriff named WCC All-Freshman Team.
  • Matt Marquess named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII.
  • Broncos had nine-game unbeaten streak from October 1 to November 3.
Women’s Soccer:
  • Won ninth WCC title.
  • Jerry Smith named WCC Coach of the Year.
  • Marian Dalmy named WCC Player of the Year, All-WCC First Team, NSCAA All-Far West Region First Team, and Soccer Buzz All-West Region First Team.
  • Kiki Bosio named All-WCC First Team, WCC All-Freshman Team, Soccer America All-Freshman Team, and Soccer Buzz All-West Freshman Team.
  • Amanda Poach named All-WCC First Team.
  • Meagan Snell and Lauren Zealear named All-WCC First Team and Soccer Buzz All-West Team.
  • Brittany Klein named All-WCC Second Team and Soccer Buzz All-West Team.
  • Meagan McCray, Jordan Angeli, and Dani Potts named All-WCC Honorable Mention.
  • Jordan Angeli and Amanda Poach played for the U.S. U-20 Team at the World Championships in September.
  • Dalmy signed contract with U.S. Women’s National team in Spring 2007.
Softball:
  • Finished sixth in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference.
  • Angela Kabanuck and Sara Overmier named to the All-PCSC second team.
  • Overmier named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII.
  • Angela Kabanuck finished third in hitting, tied for first in slugging, finished eighth in on-base percentage, third in hits (72), tied for second in doubles (14), placed second in home runs, and first in total bases and steals in the PCSC.
Men’s Tennis:
  • Placed fourth at WCC Championships.
  • Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen named All-WCC Singles Second Team and All-WCC Doubles Second Team.
  • Brian Brogan and Blane Shields earned All-WCC Honorable Mention accolades in singles and doubles.
  • Jay Won named All-WCC Second Team in singles and All-WCC Honorable Mention in doubles.
  • Robert Gallman named All-WCC Honorable Mention in doubles.
  • Team tied school record for most wins (20), and had a nine-game unbeaten streak, the second longest in program history.
  • Wong tied school record for wins in a season with 30.
  • Spent 14 in polls with a high of No. 59 in the nation.
  • Team went 19-1 when winning doubles points.
  • Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen finished with 35 wins, second all-time at SCU.
  • Bobby Rasmussen had 60 career singles wins, good for sixth all-time.
  • Blane Shields posted 22- record in singles.
  • Team played 12 ranked opponents.
Women’s Tennis:
  • Tied for fifth at WCC Championships.
  • Casey Knutson named All-WCC Second Team in singles and doubles.
  • Erika Barnes named All-WCC Second Team in doubles.
  • Kim Daniel named All-WCC Honorable Mention in singles, ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District, and WCC Spring All-Academic.
  • Erika Barnes and Casey Knutson named WCC Doubles Team of the Month for April.  
Men’s Track:
  • Competed in 11 meets and competed in Division I Track Independent Championships for the first time.
  • Mike Delaurenti set school record in 3000m Steeplechase at Steve Scott Open on April 28 with time of 9:19.88. He also won 3000m with time of 8:49.30 at Hornet Invitational on March 24, and had personal-best times in 1500m, 3000m, 3000m steeplechase, and 5000m.
  • Ryan Ward had best finishes in 100m and 200m.
  • Chris Furnari had top time in 400m.
  • Tony Dipre had top time in 800m.
Women’s Track:
  • Competed in 11 meets and competed in Division I Track Independent Championships for the first time.
  • Veronica Vazquez set school records in 100m with time of 4:42.68 and 5000m with time of 17:40.39.
  • Joanna Gistand had top time in 200m.
  • Carrie Pogorelc had top time in 400m.
  • Adrienne Puetz had time of 10:27.13 in 3000m.
  • Danielle Miller had top time in 2000m steeplechase with 11:35.50.
  • Lauren Swigart and Blossom Marimietri were first SCU track runners to compete in 10000m.
  • Joanna Gistand was the only Bronco to compete in 110m hurdles.
Volleyball:
  • Finished third in the WCC and earned ninth straight berth in the NCAA tournament.
  • Started year ranked as No. 4 in the nation, the program’s highest ranking ever.
  • Anna Cmaylo and Kim McGiven named All-WCC First Team and ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII.
  • Caroline Walters named All-WCC Honorable Mention.
  • Lindsey Evans named to WCC All-Freshman Team.
  • Anna Cmaylo named AVCA All-Pacific Region First Team and AVCA All-American Honorable Mention, becoming second Bronco volleyball player to be named All-American twice.
  • Kim McGiven named WCC Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Men’s Water Polo:
  • Finished fourth at the WWPA Championships.
  • Finished season ranked No. 16 in nation.
  • Jack Wall named ACWPC All-American honorable mention and All-WWPA First Team, becoming first Bronco All-American under Keith Wilbur.
  • Kevin Starry named All-WWPA Honorable Mention.
  • Liam Farrell was WWPA Newcomer of the Year.
  • Liam Farrell, Andrew Fitch, Tommy Kelly, and Daniel Soares named ACWPC Academic All-Americans.
  • Andrew Fitch, Tommy Kelly, Daniel Soares, Kevin Starry, and Rob Callahan named WWPA All-Academic.
  • Jack Wall led the team with 70 goals and 31 steals.
Women’s Water Polo:
  • Placed fourth at the WWPA Championships.
  • Finished No. 16 in the nation.
  • Katie Radvanyi named All-WWPA First Team and led the team with 45 goals..
  • Kristin Barnes named All-WWPA First Team.
  • Andrea Evans named All-WWPA Second Team.
  • Keith Wilbur named WWPA Coach of the Year.
  • Kaylie Pezzuto, Elizabeth Perry, Keely Baldwin, Emily Bonk, Katheryn Fraser, Kendra Betke, Christie Miller, Kellie Dunn, Amy Lamb, Meg Zimmerman, and Kirstin Olson named ACWPC All-Academics.
