In the 2006 - 07 academic year, selected as a fellow for the Center for Theology and Natural Science: Science and Transcendence Advanced Research Series conference "Complexity Theory, Emergence, and the Influence of Life on Matter," in Cancun, Mexico.

Fayeq Oweis, Modern Languages and Literatures

Selected by the Palestinian cultural Mural Project committee at San Francisco State University to design a large-scale mural honoring Dr. Edward Said (1935-2003), the renowned Arab American intellectual during the 2006 - 07 academic year.

Chad Raphael, Communication

Received the 2006 History Division Book Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, for his book Investigated Reporting: Muckrakers, Regulators, and the Struggle over Television Documentary (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2005).

Peter Ross, Math and Computer Science

Received a Certificate of Recognition from the Mathematical Association of America in the 2006 - 07 academic year. The award honors his extraordinary service to the mathematical community in organizing mathematical lectures and editing the related expository articles comprising the book Mathematical Adventures for Students and Amateurs (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, forthcoming).

William Stover, Political Science

Recognized for outstanding teaching in 2008 by the American Political Science Association. During the 2006 - 07 academic year, he was named a Senior Specialist for Conflict Resolution, Information Technology, and International Politics by the Fulbright Scholar Program administered by the Council for the International Exchange of Scholars. His geographical specialty will be the Middle East, and the award is for five years.

Invited to co-chair Manweek ’07, the third International Week on Management of Networks and Services.

Jorge González-Cruz, Mechanical Engineering

Joined a select group of scientists on the steering committee for drafting a science plan for the Intra-Americas Study of Climate Processes (IASCLIP) during the 2006 -07 academic year. The document was presented to the Variability of the American Monsoon Systems (VAMOS) panel. The plan has implications for the North American Monsoon Experiment, the Eastern Pacific Investigation of Climate, and the VAMOS Ocean-Cloud-Atmosphere-Land Study.

JoAnne Holliday, Computer Engineering

Selected to join the editorial board of IEEE Communications Letters as associate editor in the 2006 - 07 academic year.

Nam Ling, Computer Engineering

Recognized as one of the new IEEE Fellows during the the 2008 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing. Named a Distinguished Lecturer of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Circuits and Systems Society (CASS). One of only ten members selected for this position during the 2007-2008 term, Ling’s appointment was based on the recognition of his professional competence and expertise, and his communication and presentation skills. CASS Distinguished Lecturers serve the needs of their Society by addressing working engineers, academics, and students in different parts of the world in government and industry, bringing them up to date on the practical application of the latest research results.

Ed Maurer, Civil Engineering

Appointed to the Climate Change Technical Advisory Group of the California Department of Water Resources. Maurer was also awarded a $9,956 contract through UC Merced, for the study “Detection and Attribution of Climate Change Impacts on Streamflow Timing.” He was also credited in a Sports Illustrated article about world cup races being canceled because of warmer temperatures at some of the world’s premiere ski resorts.

Tokunbo Ogunfunmi, Electrical Engineering

Delegate from the Santa Clara Valley section to the 2008 IEEE Sections Congress in Canada. The congress takes place once every three years.

Thomas Schwarz, S.J., Civil Engineering

Selected as a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in the 2006 - 07 academic year.

Elected to the Executive Committee of the ASP Section of AALS and will chair the Program Committee.

Will Burns

Spoke as an invitee of the Australian government at a symposium by the United Nations Environment Program on the topic of the future of the International Whaling Commission in the 2006 - 07 academic year. He will also serve as editor in chief of the Journal of International Wildlife Law & Policy. He was also named to the editorial board of Environmental Justice, a new journal that focuses on adaptation responses to climate change under the Kyoto Protocol.

Marina Hsieh

Nominated for a second three-year term on the State Bar of California’s Council on Access and Fairness. She continues to serve on the council’s subcommittees on law schools and the Carnegie Report on Legal Education.

Honored in 2007 by Arttable: A National Organization for Professional Women in the Arts for her dedication and immense service to arts administration throughout her influential career.
