Film/Video Collection

A centralized resource collection of approximately 4800 titles on videotape, 16mm and 8mm film are available for on-campus instructional use. Complete information on the collection is available in the library's on-line catalog - OSCAR.   Faculty and staff may check out titles for preview purposes, schedule for delivery for class use, and/or put on reserve for independent student viewing in the Media Lab. Tapes  may be checked out for a maximum of 1 week.  The day before it is due, you may call us to renew the tape for an additional week.  If someone has made a reservation in the meantime, we must recall the title. We have only one copy of each program and rely on the faculty and staff to return it on time. Students may not check out videotapes, but can make arrangements to view titles in the Media Lab and/or have tape delivered for class use.

Searching in Oscar for a Video/Film Title
Did you know that all of the video titles centrally held in Media Services are listed in OSCAR?

If you are looking for a specific video title, you choose "T> Title" from the main search screen in OSCAR. If searching for videotapes on a particular subject, use the following steps:

  • Choose "S>Subject (Library of Congress Heading)" from the main search screen in OSCAR
  • Type in the subject. After the search is complete, choose from the menu "+>ADDITIONAL options" and then "L>LIMIT this search.
  • From the listing of limit options, choose "W>WHERE Item is located."
  • From the listing of "where" options, choose "C>Media Services" and then "F>Find items with above limits." This will give you a listing of the videotapes catalogued by your subject listing.

If you are unable to locate a tape through searching OSCAR, give Media Services a call, at x 4520, and we can search our database.

Film/Video Acquisitions - Rentals and Purchases
Films and videos not available in the university's collection may be rented from outside distributors.  Media Services maintains a collection of catalogs which provide detailed information on titles available for rent.  Departments are responsible for rental fees. Requests for the rental of videotapes or films should be made to Dan Maloney dmaloney@scu.edu, or x4520) in Media Services.

If you are interested in recording and previewing a program being broadcast on television please see the information on off-air recording.

Faculty who are interested in a program that they haven’t previously viewed should submit their request to preview the video(s) to Anthony Raymond, Head of the Acquisitions Department, Orradre Library araymond@scu.edu, or x5430). Previewed titles selected for purchase by the faculty member will be routed through the appropriate library process by the Acquisitions Department. Rejected titles will be returned to the vendor.

Requests for the purchase of video titles previously viewed should be submitted directly to a department’s Library Subject Specialist.
