    March 29 - June 15.

    More than 70 works of art in a wide variety of media produced by some of the most important artists of the 20th century will be on view in the de Saisset Museum exhibition Eye on the Sixties: Vision, Body, and Soul: Selections from the Collection of Harry W. and Mary Margaret Anderson. Open from Feb. 2 through March 20 and March 29 through June 15, the exhibition celebrates the artistic achievements of the 1960s while showcasing the social, cultural, and historical significance of the era.

    The dramatic cultural changes that shaped 1960s America find expression in the Eye on the Sixties exhibition. Vivid colors, shifting light effects, and experimentations with new materials characterize much of the artwork. Sections of the exhibition explore the influence of the Vietnam War on the art of the period, as well as spirituality and the body. “Instead of highlighting only one region or movement, the show attempts to show that artists across the nation engaged projects and issues in ways more similar than we usually think,” said Santa Clara University Associate Professor Andrea Pappas, the curator of the exhibition. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog with essays by Pappas and SCU Religious Studies Professor Paul Crowley.

    Eye on the Sixties includes paintings, sculpture, drawings, and prints by artists such as Robert Arneson, Bruce Beasley, Fletcher Benton, Wallace Berman, Bruce Conner, Ronald Davis, Richard Diebenkorn, Sam Francis, Helen Frankenthaler, Robert Indiana, Jasper Johns, Philip Guston, Bruce Nauman, Claes Oldenberg, David Park, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Frank Stella, Wayne Thiebaud, and William T. Wiley.

    SCU students played an active role in the creation of the exhibition, writing the labels in the galleries and helping to organize Guide by Cell content for visitors. “This project and the accompanying undergraduate class provided an opportunity for art history students to participate in this unique form of experiential learning.  Projects such as this one showcase the de Saisset Museum’s role as a vibrant campus resource for faculty teaching and student learning,” Pappas said.   •  Santa Clara to compete in 2009 Solar Decathlon

    Santa Clara University once again will have the chance to show the world that solar innovation and technology in the hands of students can make a difference. Santa Clara has been selected as one of 20 university-led teams to participate in the Department of Energy’s highly competitive Solar Decathlon, held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., in the fall of 2009. The announcement comes on the heels of SCU’s triumphant finish in the 2007 competition, taking third place overall, outdistancing Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell, and two-time decathlon winner University of Colorado, Boulder.

    “We are thrilled to have been selected once again to participate in this competition. It is the mission of Santa Clara’s School of Engineering to serve our students, our community, and our world. How better to do so than through this exciting competition that engages our students, faculty, staff, and industry partners in developing and promoting sustainable solutions to our global energy challenges," said Godfrey Mungal, dean of the School of Engineering.

    Cornell University (Ithaca, N.Y.), Rice University (Houston, Texas), and University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (Urbana, Ill.) are some of the other universities participating in the 2009 Solar Decathlon. Teams are selected from universities in the United States, Canada, and Germany; each team will receive $100,000 from the DOE as seed money to begin to design, build, and operate a unique, energy-efficient, fully solar-powered home for this competition. Each entry will use sustainable technology and demonstrate that homes powered entirely by the sun do not have to sacrifice all the modern comforts and aesthetics Americans are accustomed to.

    The Decathlon gets its name from the 10 specific areas of competition; in 2007 these were architecture, engineering, market viability, communications, comfort, appliances, hot water, lighting, energy balance, and getting around (transportation). Each home must produce enough electricity and hot water to perform all the functions of a home, from powering lights and electronics to cooking, washing clothes and dishes. The team that finishes the week of competition with the most points wins. Read more.

    Three-time Tour de France champion Greg LeMond will speak at 6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, on  “Ethics, Doping, and the Future of Cycling” at the Leavey Center.
    Joining LeMond in the discussion will be San Francisco Chronicle columnist Gwen Knapp, who has written extensively about doping. The talk coincides with the beginning of the Tour of California cycling race, scheduled to start the afternoon of Feb. 17 with a time trial in Palo Alto.

    LeMond has long been an outspoken opponent of doping in cycling. In 2007, he played an unexpected role in the international arbitration hearing that eventually decided that American cyclist Floyd Landis should forfeit his 2006 Tour de France title as a result of tests that found abnormally high levels of testosterone. LeMond testified that he had spoken with Landis after his “A” urine sample had tested positive, urging him that if his “B” sample was also positive, he should come clean, help his sport, and “more importantly, help himself.” Before his testimony, LeMond had been threatened by Landis’ manager.   •  Santa Clara University's Law Review presents family law symposium

    Married couples no longer head the majority of U.S. families, a fact that inspired the topic for Santa Clara University’s 2008 Family Law Symposium, hosted Feb. 15 by the Santa Clara Law Review.

    The day-long event, which brings together three panels of judges, attorneys, policymakers, and scholars, provides a forum for debating and analyzing the legal and social issues surrounding the changing structure of the American family. The symposium is titled “When Change Comes Home: Legal Repercussions and Comparative Perspectives on the Transforming Structure of American Households.” It will begin at 8:30 a.m. and is open to the public.

    “We felt a need to initiate discussion on this issue,” explains Wayne Chi, lead symposium editor of the Law Review. “Marriage equality is a novel topic in most law schools, but it’s a hot topic in this year’s presidential election—and it’s of prime importance to many people.”

    According to the 2005 U.S. Census, only 49.7 percent of households in America—a historic low—are led by married couples. Chi says the potential social and economic implications of the Census data are profound as cohabitation among unmarried couples becomes more common. “We need to consider reforming the law to better serve and support the full range of close personal relationships among adults and families,” he notes.
