Recipient of the 2013 Fr. Richard Coz Scholarship
SCU Senior Catherine Haupt counts herself as lucky to have known the late Fr. Richard Coz, the namesake of her scholarship, as a close family friend. She remembers her parents sharing memories of the legendary Jesuit priest, including college rugby games and travels with Fr. Coz in England. But even for other SCU students who didn’t know Fr. Coz, Catherine believes his legacy on the Mission Campus is still thriving.
“Stories of the incredible man he was are still being passed down through the students of SCU,” she says. “Even after his passing, he is still acting as a mentor for Santa Clara students. That to me is the definition of a legacy.”
Her parents, Diane ’86 and Greg ’85, are both SCU alums and Catherine saw their deep connection to the University firsthand in friendships that spanned decades. “I was raised by a herd of Broncos,” she says. She describes this group of longtime family friends as passionate people always willing to give back to the school that gave so much to them. When it came time for her to choose a college, Catherine was certain that she wanted the education and the same community experience that had made such a profound impact on her family and close friends.
During her three years at Santa Clara, she has participated in a variety of campus activities, including working at the de Saisset Museum, enjoying Bronco sports as a Ruff Rider, leading a search retreat through Campus Ministry, and volunteering with the Arrupe program at a nursing facility for senior citizens. She returned in the spring from study abroad in Lille, France ready to start an International Club at SCU for exchange students based on a similar club that helped her as a student abroad.
Catherine, a communication major, is considering her future after graduation and says the most important aspect of any employment opportunity would be working for an organization focused on benefitting the lives of the underserved. “I'm not sure which route I will take, but I do know that my SCU education has prepared me for whatever path I choose.”
