Giving to Santa Clara University
Steve Erbst '88

To Fellow SCU Alumni and Friends of Father Coz:

My name is Steve Erbst, class of ’88.  Like many of you, I am a good friend/fan of Father Coz.  As I reflect on my SCU experience ranging from playing soccer, being a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, economics classes, and supporting friends through their sporting events, my memories in class, or at games with Fr. Coz are extensive. It seems we could always count on his support as many of us participated in soccer, football, basketball, lacrosse, water polo, or rugby. I suspect there is also a common Coz thread among all of us in our post –SCU life with wedding ceremonies and baptisms that have involved Padre.

I am writing to share an idea with you that I envisioned about 12 years ago…but one that I never fulfilled.  My goal was to create a scholarship in the name of Fr. Coz.  In light of what he has meant to all of us at SCU, I feel it is important resurrect my plan so his legacy will continue forever.

I was certainly not pleased by his abrupt departure, but I have decided to turn my displeasure into something positive for Fr. Coz.  I also realize that we all contribute in our own way to Santa Clara and/or have other financial commitments, so I sincerely appreciate any support that you could provide to ensure the success of this scholarship.

What can you do to help?

  • Once you decide on your contribution, please contact: Charmaine Williams at cmwilliams@scu.edu or call 408-554-6972 directly. Currently, gift commitments ranging from $50 to $10,000+ have been received; however, a gift of any size, large or small, will assist in the effort to establish the “Pause for Coz Scholarship.”

  • Gifts Information: Santa Clara University (please do not put Coz Scholarship in the Payable line).

  • Please include the following on the memo line: “Pause for Coz Scholarship.”
  • Mailing Address:  Charmaine Williams, Santa Clara University, 500 El Camino Real, Santa Clara, CA  95053-1400
  • Furthermore, if you have additional questions around various gift options (like stock) and timelines in making your gift, contact Charmaine directly. She is helping me with the paperwork and will provide confidentiality as needed.
  • I may also be looking for 8-10 people (graduating class ranging from ‘62-’92) to remain active in this cause, making sure we meet our goal and ensuring the guidelines for the scholarship best exemplifies what Coz is all about. Let me know if you have interest.

Act quickly to add your name to the list. Our goal is to have a student recipient by this fall. Your participation is much appreciated as we move quickly to reach our initial target goal.

Sincerest Regards,

Steve Erbst ‘88
