This Fall 2013, International Student Services (ISS) welcomed incoming international students with a series of events aimed at introducing them both to life at Santa Clara and to fellow international students.

In past years, New Student Welcome has involved a day-long orientation. However, this year, the program was enhanced to offer multiple events throughout the week as international students arrived on campus. Not only was the New Student Orientation expanded and redesigned to be much more engaging and interactive, but additional optional activities were added to the schedule to introduce new international students to the Bay Area and to current students. The new programming was very well received and included the following:

A full-day New International Student Orientation (required) was held on Tuesday, Sept 17, 2013:

  • Campus Tour
  • Resource Fair with representatives from campus and local businesses (student clubs, Housing, the Hub Writing Center, OneStop, cell phone vendors, banking, Costco, and more)
  • Welcome Address & introduction of Global Engagement Office (GEO) and ISS team
  • Session on Visa Rules and Regulations
  • J-1 Student break-out activity
  • Lunch (time to meet other students as well as representatives from various departments around campus)
  • Presentation from Human Resources and the Career Center introducing on-campus and off-campus employment options for international students
  • Exploration of American Culture through 5 skits presented by the GEO team with help from current international and returning Study Abroad student volunteers. The skits were new this year and were very well received as a fun, humorous, and interactive way to introduce new international students to US cultural values.
  • Presentation by Campus Safety and Cowell Health Center
  • Final wrap up and Q&A

Restaurant HOP (optional event):  Current international student volunteers were organized to lead small groups of new students to local restaurants for dinner.  The new students were introduced to the area around SCU and were able to build relationships and community among themselves.

Bus Excursions to Valley Fair Mall and Santana Row (optional event):  Current international student volunteers led small groups of new students to the local shopping center. New students were shown how to navigate the local bus system and were able to explore shops and restaurants at Valley Fair and Santana Row.

Discover San Francisco! (optional event):  ISS partnered with SCU outdoor club, Into the Wild, to invite new international students to a day of exploration in one of America’s most visited cities, San Francisco.

Congratulations to the ISS team for facilitating such a welcoming and engaging week for the incoming international students!

Special thanks to Susan Peters, SEVIS Coordinator for International Student Services, who provided details on the Fall 2013 Welcome Week for this post.
