SCU Hosts International Summer Academy of Bioengineering

International Summer Academy of Bioengineering (ISAB)
July 1st - 10th, 2014

This summer, SCU's School of Engineering is hosting the International Summer Academy of Bioengineering (ISAB). Sixteen students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University are here to learn about the latest biotechnology research, innovations in medical diagnostics and therapeutic devices, and to hear from venture capitalists.

While here, they will have several lectures, tour SCU's facilities, and take field trips to Silicon Valley labs and biotech companies (Genentech, GE Health Care, among others), as well as neighboring academic institutions and places of interest.

Background on the International Summer Academy

The International Summer Academy (ISA) is jointly organized by two institutions, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), School of Pharmacy and Santa Clara University, School of Engineering, with distinguished themes of traditional Chinese medicines and biotechnology, respectively. The ISA was initiated in December 2012 and each year one of the two institutions hosts the ISA.

The 2013 ISA, International Summer Academy of Pharmacy (ISAP), focused on Pharmaceutical Sciences and was hosted at SJTU School of Pharmacy. The 2013 ISAP offered lectures, practice courses, and student research opportunities in all areas of drug discovery and development of traditional Chinese medicines. A total of 30 student participants had opportunities to gain first-hand experience in traditional Chinese medicine drug discovery, development, and manufacturing. Additionally, they experienced hands-on involvement in clinical practice, acupuncture, and moxibustion at Shanghai local traditional Chinese medicine hospitals.

This year's ISA, International Summer Academy of Bioengineering (ISAB), is focused on bioengineering and medical devices. Students from the SJTU School of Pharmacy and undergraduate/graduate SCU students will participate.
