DigitalTV

Below is some information that will be helpful as you prepare to purchase new television sets.
On June12 the United States required all private and public television stations, to begin digital transmission.  The signals are now in a form that requires a digital tuner.  There are (2) types of digital tuners that give the viewer the following options:

Type: ATSC  or  ClearQAM

ATSC :        The ATSC  digital tuner is needed when receiving  "over the air"  local television stations. Many of these programs will be High Definition HDTV broadcasts.  All will be digital.  In the Santa Clara region there are currently 16 stations using this format.

Clear QAM: The clear QAM digital tuner allows the free reception of unscrambled digital programming sent "in the clear" by cable TV providers.

Special Note:  Manufactures vary widely, on individual television set options.  It is the opinion of this writer, that when purchasing any television set after the June 12, 2009 date, the following minimums should be met.

General:    Product type            Plasma  or  LCD  Flat panel
Video interface         HDMI, SVideo, Composite, Component
                                            PC-interface             VGA (HD15)

                                            Display format          1080p (Full HD)
                                            multi aspect ratio      16:9,  3:4
                                            progressive scan       wide-screen modes

                                            Tuners:                   Analog, Digital, NTSC
                                                                          ATSC,  Clear QAM

The Linc-TV  cable system at Santa Clara University broadcasts in standard analog CATV format.  There are 69 channels that are fed to the residence halls 24 hours a day.  Any student with a cable ready TV set or vcr, will be able to see this basic tier of services.  Linc-Tv also feeds the new generation, of digital services.  These are at no additional cost, but the student must have a "clear QAM" digital tuner, in their television or vcr to view these services.  All HDTVservices are clear QAM only.

I hope this has been helpful, and doesn't add to the information overload, we all face from time to time.  I've also included a selection of vendors, that offer all the minimums and more in their newer television sets.
