Mission Statement

Wouldn't you rather work for a place with a Mission?

As our wordplay suggests, we are mindful that Santa Clara University not only was founded with a defining mission to educate students in the Jesuit tradition but also was established on the site of one of California's original missions, Mission Santa Clara de Asis. In our staff meetings we talk about what this means to us as a department. How does our work in HR contribute to the University's mission to develop competence, conscience and compassion in our students?

Traditionally, Jesuit education has sought to graduate men and women who will make of the world a better place, one that is more humane and just, because of their presence in it. By envisioning Santa Clara University as a working classroom or true-to-life model workplace for our students, we in HR believe University employees can contribute to this effort. We think our students will know better how to make workplaces humane and just if they have had a chance to observe or experience one here during their brief time at the University.

We think our students will know better how to make workplaces humane and just if they have had a chance to observe or experience one here during their brief time at the University.

With this in mind, our department holds a vision of a Santa Clara University working community whose members model for our students the values we seek to develop in them. We also envision a workplace that demonstrates for our students real life examples for fashioning a better world. We know these are high ideals that may seem impossible to meet, but we believe they are worthy of our very best effort.

Thus, Human Resources' departmental mission is to partner with faculty, staff and students to build the University's capacity to accomplish its purpose according to its guiding principles and, in doing so, to support individuals' efforts to reach their own potential.

Human Resources' goals are to provide Santa Clara University with expertise, leadership and service in:

  • Recruiting, retaining and developing a workforce that reflects and values the diversity of our society and is committed to accomplishing the University's mission.
  • Fostering a quality of work life that encourages all of us to demonstrate in our daily decisions and actions the competence, conscience and compassion we seek to develop in our students.
  • Advocating strategic ongoing improvement of work to focus resources, enhance productivity and improve service throughout the University.
