    Course # - CPSY x561
    Loyola Hall Room 160
    Credit Hours: 6

Register Here for In-class or Live Stream

    Course Description:

This workshop details an approach to working with clients that consider problems as an effect of cultural discourse.  The thinking is non-pathologizing and empowering.  The clinical practice opens space for working collaboratively with the client and promotes a stance of respect and curiosity.  The course will introduce students to 1) An historical development of narrative ideas, 2) an understanding of personality theory, problem development, and theory of change from this perspective 3) a different way of thinking about clients and their difficulties and 4) specific practices that flow from the theory.?

The class, which uses video and class interaction, allows for novel conceptualizations that promote co-researching possibilities with any client population.  The workshop has four major topic areas: 1) understanding postmodern / poststructural / social constructionist epistemologies and discourse theory, through personal connection to theory and discourse, theoretical understandings and an exercise in anti-pathologizing, 2) narrative metaphor with maps for understanding, 3) narrative practices, involving externalizing conversations / effects and preferences (often absent but implicit) and 4) applications (identities and protest)

This course is part of our Advanced Psychotherapy Theory certificate program.

    Instructor:

Victoria C. Dickerson Ph.D., is a world renowned teacher of narrative ideas and practices.  She has taught locally at Santa Clara University, San José State University, University of San Francisco, and John F. Course Objectives:

    • Help participants critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of any Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) characterizations of PTSD and trauma.
    • Clarify the relationships between PTSD, Complex PTSD and Complicated Trauma
    • Make participants more aware of the complexities of diagnosing and treating the foundational effects of trauma, as opposed to the co-morbid symptoms of trauma that are usually lumped under the umbrella of PTSD.
    • Help participants become more sensitive to cultural, religious, gender and ethnic factors and how they affect both the expression and resolution of traumatic material.
     Students Will Gain:
    • Recognize that the constellation of PTSD symptoms is usually represents surface manifestations of much deeper impacts that are usually experienced by recipients of trauma.
    • Improved capacity to assess and treat the existential, epistemological, ontological and spiritual impact of traumatic events, as well as help individuals become deeper, more conscious and more spiritual beings.
    • Greater appreciation for the multitude of ways in which trauma victims hold and give form to the significance of their experience, as a result of individual, gender and cultural differences.
    • Greater ability to help clients work through the deepest effects of their traumatic experience and within a much more comprehensive psycho-spiritual paradigm.

    Course Description:

It is becoming increasingly clear that the deepest impact of traumatic experience is usually not in relation to a range of PTSD symptoms but the foundational structures of self, other, reality and God. This workshop will examines the deepest levels of impact that are experienced by recipients of trauma, as well as how unresolved experiences of abuse and trauma can seriously damage an individual?s capacity to trust in other people, life and God, as well as develop an integrated sense of self.

This workshop will first examine the limitations of characterizing peri-traumatic and posttraumatic experience in terms of Post Traumatic Stress and then offer an alternative model of understanding and treatment for a range of trauma related forms of distress.

Title: Too much Information? Information Gathering and Search Costs

Abstract: A seller often needs to determine the amount of product information to provide to consumers. We model costly consumer information search in the presence of limited information. We  derive the consumer's optimal stopping rule for the search process. We  find that, in general, there is an intermediate amount of information that maximizes the likelihood of purchase. If too much information is provided, some of it is not as useful for the purchase decision, the average informativeness per search occasion is too low, and consumers end up choosing not to purchase the product. If too little information is provided, consumers may end up not having sufficient information to decide to purchase the product. The optimal amount of information increases with the consumer's ex-ante valuation of the product. One can also show that there is an intermediate amount of information that maximizes the consumer's expected utility from the search problem (social welfare under some assumptions). Furthermore, this amount may be smaller than that which maximizes the probability of purchase. That is, the market outcome may lead to information overload with respect to the social welfare optimum.  The paper can be seen as providing a rationale for why too much information may hurt consumer decision-making.

Dr. Villas-Boas is the J.Gary Shansby Professor of Marketing Strategy and the Chair of the Marketing Group at the Hass School of Business, UC Berkeley. He has published extensively in competitive strategy, design of marketing organizations, distribution channels, customer relationship management, customer recognition, product line design, and industrial organization. His research has appeared in several journals, including Marketing Science, Management Science, Journal of Economic Theory, RAND Journal of Economics, Journal of Marketing Research, and Journal of Economics and Management Strategy.

His current research interests include competitive strategy, pricing in the digital economy, choice, information, and assortment decisions with evaluation costs, industry dynamics, and corporate social responsibility.

    Course Objectives:

    • Class members will learn the difference between existential and neurotic anxiety
    • Class members will learn the four phases of existential therapy
    • Class members will learn about the centrality of the here-and-now in existential therapy
    • Class members will learn about awareness in this form of therapy (vs insight or behavior change)
    • Class members will learn about how this form of therapy emerges from philosophy and is focused on subjective experience
    • Class members will learn on the role played by the therapists? personal experiences.

    Course Description:

Among the major approaches to psychotherapy, Existential Psychotherapy integrates dynamic, cognitive, behavioral and humanistic and yet is a powerfully unique, active approach to therapy.
Based on philosophical and spiritual traditions, Existential Therapy focuses on the personal subjective experience of meaning. Existential therapy explores the inner world as the client creates it. This workshop focuses on the American approaches to existential therapy. Beginning with the philosophical/spiritual approaches of Tillich and Buber, the workshop synthesizes the therapeutic approaches of Frankl, Bugental, Yalom and May.
Constructs employed include the centrality of choice, the tension between the fear of the unknown (freedom) and the stagnation of the status quo (security), the salience of the here-and-now experience of self and the therapist use of self.

The workshop is rich with practical clinical tips and demonstrations. The use of metaphor and storytelling are shown as integral techniques in therapy especially when combined with CBT, dynamic and constructivist approaches.
Four additional CE units are available from reading Dr. Shapiro?s recent book  Finding Meaning, Facing Fears in the Autumn of Your Years (45-65).

Secrets in Psychotherapy: Concealment, Disclosure, and Therapeutic Success
  • Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
    Course # - CPSY x552
    Loyola Hall Room 160
    Credit Hours: 6

    Course Objectives:

    ·         Understand the role of secrecy and secrets in coping and psychotherapy
    ·         Identify the most commonly reported "most burdensome" secrets of clients
    ·         Understand the role of self-concealment processes in help seeking, LGBT issues, self-esteem management, and relationship development
    ·         Identify issues in facilitating safe discussions of secrets and secret keeping in individual, couples, and family therapy

    Course Description:

The belief that revealing one's secrets to a trusted confidant is good for the soul and psyche can be found throughout history, from the Confession of Souls to Freud's pursuit of the pathogenic secret. Most therapists have witnessed how a client?s disclosure of troubling personal information can often be a turning point in therapy, a moment demarcating a shift from shame and vulnerability to relief, authenticity, integration, safety, and pride.

Uncovering and revealing areas of experience that have long been hidden is challenging for both client and therapist. Secrets that are most tightly held, such as sexual abuse, rape, self-hatred, family secrets, extramarital affairs, disenfranchised grief, and serious medical conditions, including HIV-status, are painful and often stigmatized experiences. These secrets reflect the core of clients' inner worlds--the places where they feel least loved and lovable, and most alone. In families, secrets can create triangles and cutoffs, can often pass from generation to generation, and can create the symptoms that bring families into our consulting rooms. Navigating this world of secrets, and sensitively helping clients negotiate their conflicts surrounding disclosure, are hallmarks of the effective therapist.

In this one-day seminar we will look at secrets in everyday clinical practice and identify therapeutic techniques and relationship qualities that can bring the dialectic of concealment and disclosure into the center of therapeutic action. Recent work on self-concealment, trauma disclosure, covert processes in therapy, therapist and client disclosure, and end-of-life closure will inform lectures and discussion.
This workshop is designed for marriage and family counselors, psychologists, social workers, health professionals, clergy, and other human service workers.

    Instructor:

Dale G. Larson, Ph.D., is Professor of Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University.  A researcher, licensed clinical psychologist and marriage and family therapist, Dr. Larson is a Fulbright Scholar and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association.  He is the author of the award-winning book, The Helper's Journey:  Working With People Facing Grief, Loss, and Life-Threatening Illness, and his work on self-concealment and health have gained national attention, with more than 100 research studies using his Self-Concealment Scale, and articles in Redbook, First for Women, and Family Circle.

Supervision in a Clinical Setting
  • Friday, Jun 21, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

    Course # - CPSY x374

    Loyola Hall Room 160

    Credit Hours: 7

Register Here for In-Class or Live Stream!

    Course Objectives:

    • Did the instructor address the different styles of supervision?
    • Did the group discuss the process of supervisee development?
    • Did the instructor review requirements to supervise practicum and interns?
    • Did the instructor address the professional and ethical responsibilities of the supervisor?

    Course Description:

Clinical supervision is one of the most important areas of psychotherapy training. Some view it as the principal method for preparing counselors-in-training for psychotherapeutic practice. However, until recently little focus had been given to skills and qualifications needed to be an effective supervisor. The goals of the course are four fold: to understand developmental needs of supervisee, gain exposure to differing supervisory styles, gain insight into one's supervisory style, and receive overview of regulations and ethical standards for supervision. Theoretical and applied aspects of supervision will be explored. Any recent requirement changes will also be discussed.  Through case studies, discussion, peer supervision and research, participants will have an opportunity to explore relevant issues and effective supervisory styles. Participants are encouraged to bring in cases for discussion.

    Instructor:

Dr. Lucila Ramos-Sánchez is an associate professor in the Counseling Psychology Department at Santa Clara University. She received her doctorate from the University of California, Santa Barbara in Counseling/Clinical/School Psychology, with an emphasis in counseling psychology. This Is Your Brain on Marriage
  • Friday, Jul 19, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

    Course # - CPSY x704
    Loyola Hall Room 160
    Credit Hours: 3

    Course Objectives:
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
    • Have a clear understanding of the big, medium and ‘on the ground’ picture of brain research and how that knowledge relates to couples work (see attached that will become a handout).
    • Have the language to help couples engage in Emotional Forensics.
    • Learn specific tools to use with couples.

    Course Description:
Many clients encountered in psychotherapy practice suffer from repeating patterns (neural pathways) that are obtained genetically as well as through childhood, life experience, and inter-generational behaviors. These patterns, and the repetitious cycle, often cause great difficulty and distress in the client’s life and in their interpersonal relationships.

Understanding and explaining the basics of Attachment Theory and interpersonal neurobiological research helps clients place their struggles into known and changeable behaviors and competency. Ultimately, couples need hope while their brains are rewired through therapy, practice, and neural plasticity. I refer to this with clients as Emotional Forensics. Being able to name one’s attachment style and limbic response takes many couples issues out of content discussions and/or fights and into process interactions where healing occurs.

Using Spiritual and Religious Tools in Mental Health Treatment
  • Friday, May 31, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
    Course # - CPSY x840
    Loyola Hall Room 160
    Credit Hours: 6

    Course Objectives:

    ·         To outline the physical and mental health benefits of spiritual and religious engagement
    ·         To articulate the tension and rapprochement between psychology and religion in clinical practice
    ·         To list and apply to clinical practice 13 spiritual and religious tools for the psychotherapist
    ·         To articulate 7 principles for therapists working with spiritual and religious clients
    ·         Discuss 4 typical ethical problems with psychotherapy and spirituality integration

    Course Description:

There has been a remarkable amount of interest in the relationship between spirituality, religion, psychology, and health of late. Contemporary interest in spirituality and religion is hot among not only the general population but among professionals in the mental and physical health disciplines. While most people believe in God and consider themselves to be spiritual, religious, or both, most mental health professionals have little if any training in this area. Mental health professionals can use spiritual and religious principles and tools to better serve their clients even if they do not share the same religious interests. The purpose of this workshop is to offer thirteen spiritual and religious tools common among all of the major religious traditions that can be used by contemporary professional mental health professionals in clinical practice to enhance the already high quality professional services that they provide. Examples of spiritually and religiously integrated treatment along with a variety of ethical precautions are outlined as well.

    Course # - CPSY x
    Loyola Hall Room 160
    Credit Hours: 6

Register Here for In-class or Live Stream!

    Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
    • Identify universal facial expressions which reveal emotional states of our patients: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, and curiosity.
    • Identify signs of autonomic activity which convey emotional arousal and relaxation: pupil size, visible carotid pulse, nostril flaring, changes in breathing rhythms - sighing and holding the breath, and flushing or blanching of the face and neck.
    • Gross Body language and posture: upper body/lower body, leaning, arm/hand gestures, movement/stillness.
    • Integrating verbal interaction with neurophysiologic signs
    • Congruence and incongruence ? how to respond

    Course Description:

In the course of psychotherapy clinicians often wrestle with the timing and assessment of their interpretations and interventions. Verbal cues can take the clinician only so far in their understanding of their patients and drawing  inferences about their experiences. Other, nonverbal cues are often learned through experience and may not be consciously integrated for the clinician.

In this course, an observational model will be presented which integrates facial expression, patterns of breathing, posture, and autonomic signs of stress and relaxation. With this model in mind, the clinician can have an additional nonverbal map of the central unconscious themes of the patient?s interior world. This model also serves an informative guide to the effectiveness of the clinician?s interventions. The work of Ekman, Sapolsky, and Rosen will be presented.
