An Introduction to Gottman Marital Therapy: A Crash Course for Clinicians
  • Friday, Aug 16, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

    Course # - CPSY x286
    Loyola Hall Room 160
    Credit Hours: 6

Register Here for In-class or Live Stream!

    Course Objectives:

    Participants will be able to:
    • Summarize the research on prediction of future relationship stability
    • Describe the seven levels of the Sound Relationship House theory
    • Summarize the therapeutic goals in Gottman Therapy for the Friendship System, Conflict System, and the Meaning System
    • Describe and implement six core interventions described in Dr. Gottman's book: Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work

    Course Description:

Based on John Gottman's "Love Lab," and 40 years of research on marital couples' successes and failures, this workshop explores assessment and treatment strategies in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. Characteristic myths and assumptions long held by clinicians about what is "dysfunctional" when a marriage is struggling, and what is "functional" when a marriage is going well, are challenged and novel methods for treatment are explored. This model provides clinicians an overview of treatment objectives related to the three central components of the Sound Relationship House (SRH) Model developed by Drs. John & Julie Gottman: 1) The Friendship System, 2) The Conflict System and 3) The Meaning System.

Integrating parts of Dr. Gottman's highly acclaimed book, Seven Principles for Making Marriages Work (required text for the class); participants will conceptualize some of the Seven Principles exercises for couples into the overall theoretical framework of the SRH theory.   Participants will be provided case examples, demonstrations, and extensive role playing opportunities. No previous Gottman Method training or experience needed!

            Instructor:

Dr. Navarra, clinician and researcher, specializes in treating couples in recovery from addiction. He is Research Associate at Mental Research Institute and Co-founder of the Center for Couples in Recovery, where he developed the "Couple Recovery Development Approach" (CRDA), a research-based relational model of recovery. He has presented his research at numerous professional conferences and workshops. Currently, he is collaborating with renowned relationship researcher Dr. John Gottman in designing a research study on the effectiveness of couple therapy in outpatient alcoholism treatment programs. Publication credits include chapters in two books on treating couples in recovery and articles on couple recovery.

An Introduction to Narrative Therapy: A Poststructural Approach
  • Friday, Jul 26, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

    Course # - CPSY x561
    Loyola Hall Room 160
    Credit Hours: 6

Register Here for In-class or Live Stream!

    Course Objectives:

    • Introduce students to a historical development of narrative ideas.
    • Introduce students to an understanding of personality theory, problem development, and theory of change from this perspective.
    • Introduce students to a different way of thinking about clients and their difficulties
    • Introduce students to specific practices that flow from the theory.
    • Learning ways of thinking that can promote a co-researching of possibilities with any client.
    • Introduce students to a historical development of narrative ideas.

    Course Description:

This workshop details an approach to working with clients that consider problems as an effect of cultural discourse.  The thinking is non-pathologizing and empowering.  The clinical practice opens space for working collaboratively with the client and promotes a stance of respect and curiosity.  The class, which uses video and class interaction, allows for novel conceptualizations that promote co-researching possibilities with any client population.  The workshop has four major topic areas: 1) understanding postmodern / poststructural / social constructionist epistemologies and discourse theory, through personal connection to theory and discourse, theoretical understandings and an exercise in anti-pathologizing, 2) narrative metaphor with maps for understanding, 3) narrative practices, involving externalizing conversations / effects and preferences (often absent but implicit) and 4) applications (identities and protest)

This course is part of our Advanced Psychotherapy Theory certificate program.

         Instructor:

Counseling for Grief and Loss: Innovations in Theory and Technique

    Course # - CPSY x680
    Loyola Hall Room 160
    Credit Hours: 6

Register Here for In-class or Live Stream!

    Course Objectives:

    • Describe recent innovations in models of grief and grief counseling
    • Discuss clinical implications of recent developments in grief counseling research and the DSM-5
    • Identify and use specific process-experiential and cognitive-behavioral interventions with clients facing grief and loss.
    • Describe the elements of a person-centered approach to grief counseling developed by Dr. Larson
    • Organize treatment plans around the goal of getting grief working for clients
    • Distinguish compassion fatigue and burnout and identify specific antidotes to both

    Course Description:

A growing number of therapists are specializing in work with clients facing grief and loss, and all therapists will at some time find their clients struggling with these issues, whether it be the loss of a loved one through death or illness, the loss of a relationship, or the loss of personal health. In this seminar, Dr. Larson brings together innovations in theory and practice that will enhance your efficacy and personal growth as a therapist counseling clients facing grief and loss. Because loss is such an inescapable part of life, one that is present in all stressful events, the concepts and skills focused on in this class are applicable across all counseling situations and in our personal lives as well.

The seminar will explore recent developments in theory, research and treatment, including the diagnosis and treatment of complicated grief; differential diagnosis of bereavement-related depression and major depressive disorder; continuing bonds with the deceased and the reworking of shattered assumptions; the role and clinical implications of emotion regulation processes (e.g., experiential avoidance, thought suppression, rumination) in normal and complicated grief;  clinical applications of the Worden, Stroebe and Shear models of grief and grief counseling;  a person-centered approach to grief counseling recently outlined by the instructor; secrets and self-concealment in grief and loss; the Helper's Pit and  techniques for maintaining balanced emotional involvement with distressed clients; and strategies for enhancing personal growth as a therapist working with these profound existential and therapeutic issues.

            Instructor:

Dale G. Larson, Ph.D. (U. C. Berkeley) is a Professor of Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University, where he directs the graduate Health Psychology Program. A national leader in end-of-life research, theory, and training, he is a Fulbright Scholar, a Fellow in the American Psychological Association, and the recipient of numerous awards for his contributions to end-of-life care. The author of the award-winning book, The Helper's Journey: Working With People Facing Grief, Loss, and Life-Threatening Illness, he has published widely on counseling and health issues, self-concealment , stress theory, and counseling skills, and has had a clinical practice for more than 25 years. His undergraduate degree in psychology is from the University of Chicago, and his doctorate is in clinical psychology from U. C. Berkeley. Dale Larson?s ability to translate theory and research into effective clinical practice has made him a popular speaker at national and international conferences.

    Course # - CPSY x209
    Loyola Hall Room 160
    Credit Hours: 6

Register Here for In-class or Live Stream!

    Course Objectives:

    • Help participants critically evaluate the strengths and limitations of any Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) characterizations of PTSD and trauma.
    • Clarify the relationships between PTSD, Complex PTSD and Complicated Trauma
    • Make participants more aware of the complexities of diagnosing and treating the foundational effects of trauma, as opposed to the co-morbid symptoms of trauma that are usually lumped under the umbrella of PTSD.
    • Help participants become more sensitive to cultural, religious, gender and ethnic factors and how they affect both the expression and resolution of traumatic material.
     Students Will Gain:
    • Recognize that the constellation of PTSD symptoms is usually represents surface manifestations of much deeper impacts that are usually experienced by recipients of trauma.
    • Improved capacity to assess and treat the existential, epistemological, ontological and spiritual impact of traumatic events, as well as help individuals become deeper, more conscious and more spiritual beings.
    • Greater appreciation for the multitude of ways in which trauma victims hold and give form to the significance of their experience, as a result of individual, gender and cultural differences.
    • Greater ability to help clients work through the deepest effects of their traumatic experience and within a much more comprehensive psycho-spiritual paradigm.

    Course Description:

It is becoming increasingly clear that the deepest impact of traumatic experience is usually not in relation to a range of PTSD symptoms but the foundational structures of self, other, reality and God. This workshop will examines the deepest levels of impact that are experienced by recipients of trauma, as well as how unresolved experiences of abuse and trauma can seriously damage an individual?s capacity to trust in other people, life and God, as well as develop an integrated sense of self.

This workshop will first examine the limitations of characterizing peri-traumatic and posttraumatic experience in terms of Post Traumatic Stress and then offer an alternative model of understanding and treatment for a range of trauma related forms of distress.

This workshop should be helpful to any psychological professional and/or spiritual director e.g., counselor, psychotherapist, social worker, doctor, nurse, social worker, chaplain, spiritual director, pastoral care professional, drug and alcohol counselor, as well anyone who works with victims of trauma.

    o.      Congruence and incongruence - how to respond
    p.      A course evaluation will be completed by each participant.

    Course Description:

In the course of psychotherapy clinicians often wrestle with the timing and assessment of their interpretations and interventions. Verbal cues can take the clinician only so far in their understanding of their patients and drawing  inferences about their experiences. Other, nonverbal cues are often learned through experience and may not be consciously integrated for the clinician.

In this course, an observational model will be presented which integrates facial expression, patterns of breathing, posture, and autonomic signs of stress and relaxation. With this model in mind, the clinician can have an additional nonverbal map of the central unconscious themes of the patient's interior world. This model also serves an informative guide to the effectiveness of the clinician's interventions. The work of Ekman, Sapolsky, and Rosen will be presented.

           Instructor:

    Credit Hours: 6

Register Here for In-class or Live Stream!

    Course Objectives:

    • Class members will learn the difference between existential and neurotic anxiety
    • Class members will learn the four phases of existential therapy
    • Class members will learn about the centrality of the here-and-now in existential therapy
    • Class members will learn about awareness in this form of therapy (vs insight or behavior change)
    • Class members will learn about how this form of therapy emerges from philosophy and is focused on subjective experience
    • Class members will learn on the role played by the therapists? personal experiences.

    Course Description:

Among the major approaches to psychotherapy, Existential Psychotherapy integrates dynamic, cognitive, behavioral and humanistic and yet is a powerfully unique, active approach to therapy.
Based on philosophical and spiritual traditions, Existential Therapy focuses on the personal subjective experience of meaning. Existential therapy explores the inner world as the client creates it. This workshop focuses on the American approaches to existential therapy. Beginning with the philosophical/spiritual approaches of Tillich and Buber, the workshop synthesizes the therapeutic approaches of Frankl, Bugental, Yalom and May.
Constructs employed include the centrality of choice, the tension between the fear of the unknown (freedom) and the stagnation of the status quo (security), the salience of the here-and-now experience of self and the therapist use of self.

The workshop is rich with practical clinical tips and demonstrations. The use of metaphor and storytelling are shown as integral techniques in therapy especially when combined with CBT, dynamic and constructivist approaches.
Four additional CE units are available from reading Dr. Shapiro?s recent book  Finding Meaning, Facing Fears in the Autumn of Your Years (45-65).

Supervision in a Clinical Setting
  • Friday, Jun 21, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM

    Course # - CPSY x374
    Loyola Hall Room 160
    Credit Hours: 6

Register Here for In-class or Live Stream!

    Course Objectives:

    • Did the instructor address the different styles of supervision?
    • Did the group discuss the process of supervisee development?
    • Did the instructor review requirements to supervise practicum and interns?
    • Did the instructor address the professional and ethical responsibilities of the supervisor?

    Course Description:

Clinical supervision is one of the most important areas of psychotherapy training. Some view it as the principal method for preparing counselors-in-training for psychotherapeutic practice. However, until recently little focus had been given to skills and qualifications needed to be an effective supervisor. The goals of the course are four fold: to understand developmental needs of supervisee, gain exposure to differing supervisory styles, gain insight into one's supervisory style, and receive overview of regulations and ethical standards for supervision. Theoretical and applied aspects of supervision will be explored. Any recent requirement changes will also be discussed.  Through case studies, discussion, peer supervision and research, participants will have an opportunity to explore relevant issues and effective supervisory styles. Participants are encouraged to bring in cases for discussion.

    Instructor:

Dr. Lucila Ramos-Sánchez is an associate professor in the Counseling Psychology Department at Santa Clara University. She received her doctorate from the University of California, Santa Barbara in Counseling/Clinical/School Psychology, with an emphasis in counseling psychology. Dr. Ramos-Sanchez joined the Santa Clara University faculty in fall of 2000.  She has published in the areas of Latino/a mental health specifically investigating variables that affect counselor credibility, the effects of bilingualism in the counseling process, self-efficacy and academic achievement of Mexican-American students, and clinical supervision.  From a clinical perspective, her interest is in the area of multicultural counseling.

This Is Your Brain on Marriage
  • Friday, Jul 19, 2013 from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM

    Course # - CPSY x704
    Loyola Hall Room 160
    Credit Hours: 3

    Course Objectives:
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
    • Have a clear understanding of the big, medium and "on the ground" picture of brain research and how that knowledge relates to couples work (see attached that will become a handout).
    • Have the language to help couples engage in Emotional Forensics.
    • Learn specific tools to use with couples.
    Course Description:
Many clients encountered in psychotherapy practice suffer from repeating patterns (neural pathways) that are obtained genetically as well as through childhood, life experience, and inter-generational behaviors. These patterns, and the repetitious cycle, often cause great difficulty and distress in the client's life and in their interpersonal relationships.

Understanding and explaining the basics of Attachment Theory and interpersonal neurobiological research helps clients place their struggles into known and changeable behaviors and competency. Ultimately, couples need hope while their brains are rewired through therapy, practice, and neural plasticity. I refer to this with clients as Emotional Forensics. Being able to name one's attachment style and limbic response takes many couples issues out of content discussions and/or fights and into process interactions where healing occurs.

Why is God for Christians Good for Nothing?
  • Friday, Oct 11, 2013 from 2:00 PM to 3:15 PM

Terry Eagleton, Distinguished Professor of English Literature at Lancaster University, Professor of Cultural Theory at the National University of Ireland, and Distinguished Visiting Professor of English Literature at the University of Notre Dame.

Atheists tend to claim that God is entirely pointless, and so does the doctrine of creation. Here, at least, is some common ground between Richard Dawkins and Pope Francis. This talk will try among other things to spell out why God is pointless and why this is the whole point of God. It will also seek to remind us that when we claim that God is good, we have very little clue as to what we are talking about.

Wisdom can be obtained and applied sooner rather than later.  Wisdom Therapy aims to achieve that through the integration of empirically supported best practices from Western Psychological Science, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and Emotional Intelligence and empirically validated practices from Eastern Traditions, such as Mindfulness Meditation, Gratitude, Humility, and Empathy/Compassion practices.  This day-long course will enable health care professionals to add and apply these practical and effective techniques to their clinical practice aimed at reducing anger, anxiety and depression and increasing health, well-being, and life-satisfaction of their clients, and of themselves.  Multimedia, videos, and humor will be included to make for an entertaining day of learning and fun.

Your Values, Your Assets, Your Way: The Benefits of Smart Estate Planning
  • Friday, Oct 11, 2013 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM

Estate planning is much more than drawing up a will or setting up a family trust. Choose from two interactive sessions, each tailored to a different life stage. Both sessions will help you understand the benefits of smart estate and gift planning aligned with your values, while providing for your family and diminishing your tax burden.

Both sessions are open to anyone who's interested, but we recommend choosing the one that best matches your personal circumstances.

    Session one (1 - 1:45 PM)

    • You are getting started in your career and have not yet started a family.
    • You have a young family and are mid-career, your will is out of date, and you have multiple competing priorities.

    Session two (2 - 2:45 PM)

    • Your children are grown, you are experiencing the joy of being grandparents, and you have retired or are planning to do so in the near future.
    • You are single/widowed and have been enjoying retirement for several years.

Both sessions will be led by Charles H. (Chuck) Packer, J.D./MBA '80. Chuck is an Attorney at Law with Hopkins & Carley, where he is a member of the Family Wealth & Tax Planning Department. He focuses his practice in the areas of strategic planning for high net worth individuals and families through estate, gift, and philanthropic tax planning.

Mr. Packer chairs the Planned Giving Advisory Board at Santa Clara University and is also Chair of the Santa Clara University Kasner Estate Planning Symposium.
