Assistant Professor in the History of Asian art

Art and Art History Department

Purpose:

The Department of Art and Art History at Santa Clara University, a Catholic, Jesuit University, seeks applicants for a tenure-track, assistant professor position in the History of Asian art, China preferred. The position is contingent on funding. Teaching-load is seven courses over three quarters with one course reduction for research (and an additional course reduction in the first year). Courses include a two-quarter Culture and Ideas 1 & 2 sequence, one course for Culture and Ideas 3, introductory courses in Asian art and upper division courses in the candidate's area of specialty. Specialist in the visual culture of Asia-China preferred-with strong interdisciplinary approach to the field. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate evidence of a scholarly program or trajectory. Service to the department, college or university is also expected from a successful candidate.

Qualifications

Ph. D. required by time of appointment;  teaching experience beyond level of teaching assistant preferred; potential for publication required, previous publications preferred. Specialist in the visual culture of Asia is required, expertise in China preferred, along with a strong interdisciplinary approach to the field. Ability to teach Asian art as part of a broader global perspective is highly desirable. Potential for contribution to the mission, goals, objectives and priorities of the institution and the department required.

Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

  1. Teaching the regular faculty course load of seven courses over the three quarters of the academic year with a one-course reduction for research (one extra reduction in first year)
  2. Conducting all assigned class meetings and exams
  3. Holding weekly office hours on campus
  4. Administering numerical and narrative course evaluations to each class as assigned by the chair.
  5. Maintaining an active research program leading to publication in peer-reviewed venues
  6. Undertaking undergraduate advising and service responsibilities as assigned by the Department Chair and Dean's Office.
  7. Contributing to the University, College, Department and/or other Program mission, goals, objectives, and priorities; in a manner appropriate to expertise and rank, as determined in consultation with the Chair.
  8. Participating in the University community of scholars
