DISCOVER Luncheon Speaker Series

The Search for What Matters

This DISCOVER luncheon speaker series sponsored by the Bannan Institute aims to provide a space on campus for a discussion of personal experiences and values– among faculty, students, alums, and staff of the university.

"What ought I to do?" is the Socratic question that drove the tradition of liberal arts that has been the core of Western education. That question is especially urgent for undergraduates who must choose a path for their lives. Faced with a multitude of career options and often uncertain about their own gifts and aspirations, they can frequently let other voices determine what they will do: the opinion of peers, family expectations, or the demands of the marketplace. The Jesuit tradition that guides Santa Clara University has always emphasized that education has a moral purpose beyond providing specific job skills. This tradition has also taught the practice of spiritual discernment to listen in faith to God's invitation about what path to choose.

It is our belief that faculty, staff, and alumni at SCU have much to offer our undergraduates as models for such decision making about life choices.
