CSA at SCU

What is CSA?

CSA, (for Community Supported Agriculture) is a way for the food buying public to create a relationship with a local farm and receive a weekly box of produce. It is a way of supporting local farms and eating locally and seasonally. By making a financial commitment to a farm, people become "members" (or "subscribers") of the CSA. Most CSA farmers prefer that members pay for the season up-front, but some farmers will accept weekly or quarterly payments. The Arrupe Partnerships for Community-based Learning through its collaboration with the Catalán Family Farm supports CSA for members of the SCU community and its surrounding neighbors. This partnership allows students to learn about sustainable agriculture and organic farming and includes opportunities to work with the Catalán family at their farm in Hollister.

Who Are the Farmers?                            catalan_logo

The Catalán Family Farm is a small family-run farm dedicated to sustainable agriculture and organic farming. María Inés Catalán, founder of the farm, is a former farm worker and single mother who manages the farm together with her daughter, three sons, and their families. She regularly responds to requests from the community to share her expertise and is one of the only Latina women in the US who runs her own farm and CSA program. She was recently recognized by the USDA for her work assisting other small farmers who are making the transition to organic farming.
