Academic Programs

The Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University located in Berkeley, California is one of the two Jesuit theological centers in the United States operated by the Society of Jesus. Aware of its own unique geographical and demographic location, the Jesuit School is an international center for the culturally contextualized study of theology and ministry, and admits students from all over the world. The Jesuit School is accredited by the Vatican Congregation of Catholic Education as an Ecclesiastical Faculty of Theology, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the American Association of Theological Schools.

JST faculty are well-published scholars with national and international reputations. Faithful to the Catholic tradition, they prepare students for today's multi-cultural world and Church. Faculty teach students how to think critically about theology and how to live a faith that does justice serving the Church. Students have access to professors in all fields of theology and related disciplines at Santa Clara University, including ecumenical and interreligious dialogue.

  • MDivMaster of Divinity

    The Master of Divinity (M.Div.) is a three-year academic and professional degree that meets the needs for both academic training and pastoral experience of those preparing for pastoral ministry in the Roman Catholic Church.

  • MTSMaster of Theological Studies

    The Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) program is a two year advanced academic degree program that offers students a broad understanding of the Catholic theological vision in combination with areas of concentration including liturgy, history, spirituality and ethics.

  • STBBachelor of Sacred Theology

    The Bachelor of Sacred Theology (S.T.B.), a four-year Roman Catholic ecclesiastical degree, shall ensure a solid grounding in the whole of Catholic doctrine. This degree requires Philosophical foundations and Latin.

  • STLLicentiate in Sacred Theology

    The Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) degree is an advanced two year degree suggested for religious, clergy and lay to further theological expertise for service in official capacities in religious communities and dioceses, and for teaching in higher education, diocesan schools and seminaries.

  • STDDoctor of Sacred Theology

    The Doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) is the highest Roman Catholic ecclesiastical degree in advanced theological study, which is intended to further students' theological expertise in preparation for scholarly careers in service to the Church.
