About Fr. Kevin

Fr. Kevin Burke returned to full-time teaching at JST after making a sabbatical during 2012-2013, which followed his term as Dean of JST. Fr. Burke initially came to JST in 2006 to serve as Academic Dean. Prior to this he served on the faculty of Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1997-2006.

A native of Wyoming and a Jesuit of the Missouri Province, Fr. Burke received his doctorate in Systematic Theology from Weston Jesuit with a dissertation exploring the philosophical foundations for theology developed by the Salvadoran theologian and martyr, Ignacio Ellacuría. The Ground Beneath the Cross: The Theology of Ignacio Ellacuría was published by Georgetown University Press in 2000. He later co-edited a collection of essays entitled Love that Produces Hope: The Thought of Ignacio Ellacuría (Liturgical Press, 2006).

A Jesuit for thirty-five years, Fr. Burke is deeply rooted in Ignatian spirituality and he loves telling the stories of those who exemplify this distinctive way of following Christ. Two other books grow out of this love: Pedro Arrupe: Essential Writings (Orbis Books, 2004) and The Ignatian Tradition (Liturgical Press, 2009), a book he co-authored and co-edited with his sister, Dr. Eileen Burke-Sullivan.

An examination of the foundations of Catholic theology, Fr. Burke’s fifth book, Introduction to Catholic Theology, is an audio-book produced by the innovative Now You Know Media.

Fr. Burke teaches in the areas of Christology, Fundamental Theology, and general Systematic Theology. The courses he most recently taught were an introductory Christology course from a concern of historical human suffering and an advanced degree seminar co-taught with Julia Prinz, VDMF, Ph.D., in spring 2014.
