The purpose of the program is to teach law students the fundamentals of International Humanitarian Law (IHL)and to provide them with opportunities to work with the material they have learned, including the treaties, in the context of hypothetical, yet realistic, fact patterns. The program will consist of a combination of lectures and workshops, involving hypothetical fact patterns that the students analyze and discuss during the workshop sessions. The workshops will provide a dynamic setting for students to apply the material covered during the lectures.

 

Students must complete an application, including a statement of interest.

Eligibility and Application

The program is available to students matriculated at an ABA accredited U.S. law school as of the date of the program, and who have completed successfully the first year of full-time or part-time study.

 

Interested students must complete an application, including a statement of interest. Completed applications must be received at the Center for Global Law & Policy by December 1, 2007. Acceptance decisions will be made based on the students’ relevant course and field experience and the Statement of Interest. Acceptance decisions will be made after December 1, 2007, by a committee consisting of members of the CGLP and International Committee for the Red Cross. Applicants will be notified after January 1, 2008.

 

The program is limited to a maximum of 40 students.

 

Miscellaneous

Upon completion of the program, students will receive a Certificate of Completion from the ICRC.

 

All course materials will be provided at no cost to the students.

 

Students will be expected to attend all sessions of the entire program. If any student cannot attend all sessions, that student must inform the CGLP prior to the start of the program.

 

Students will be responsible for their own transportation, lodging, and food. However, some meals may be provided by the program organizers, or other program sponsors.
