Environmental Law Society

The Environmental Law Society (ELS) is a student organization geared toward motivating like-minded students interested in environmental issues.  ELS hosts various guest speakers (law professors, scientists, attorneys, environmental advocates) to discuss current environmental law and policy.   We aim to provide students with networking opportunities, community service, social events, and roundtable discussions.

ELS is present on many law school campuses across the nation, including chapters at Stanford, Berkeley, Hastings, Davis, and McGeorge.  Formed at Santa Clara University School of Law in 1971, ELS was one of the first law student groups to organize at Santa Clara.  Environmental Law professor Kenneth Manaster joined the law faculty in 1972 and has served as the Society's advisor ever since.  "In October 1973 the Society made news when it brought suit against Marriott's Great America Theme Park and the City of Santa Clara over the environmental consequences of anticipated development.  According to Prof. Manaster many of the issues in the litigation were made moot when anticipated federal regulations were not adopted.  The case was dismissed by stipulation on May 2, 1974." MARK THOMAS, FROM PROMISE TO PROMINENCE 224 (Santa Clara University, 2003).

ELS serves all law students interested in environmental issues.  Our goal is to mobilize law students who are inspired to protect the environment.  We encourage students to reduce, reuse, and recycle.  ELS promotes conservation and sustainability on campus and in the community at large.  In our pursuit of social justice, the environment takes center stage.  We strive to use jurisprudence to clean the waters, tend the soil, and bend to the wind.
