Future Cities & Sustainable Development
Future City Competition
http://www.futurecity.org/
As a part of the events leading up to National Engineers Week, The Future City regional (N. California) competition will be held on campus on Saturday, January 28th. Teams of seventh and eighth grade students will be using SimCity software to design their city models, and then they will construct physical models of them. The contest is judged by these criteria: computer evaluation of the city, the computer city design, the city model, team presentations and project essays/abstracts written by the students on their project. The aim of the contest is to further student interest in engineering and science.
One of the objectives of the Future City competition is to create a model city that would work in harmony with the environment instead of against it—it will be "sustainable" instead of "harmful." The city will be energy efficient and recycled materials are used for construction.
The regional winner will be invited to participate in the national competition in Washington, D.C. February 22nd. Watch for photos taken during the competition They will be displayed in the University Library's lobby the week of January 30th - Feb. 20th.
