Library Guide for Business Students

Research Services

There are several ways to obtain assistance from a Reference Librarian.

  1. Information Commons Desk

Current Information Commons Desk hours are available online. Holiday, summer and inter-session hours will vary.

  2. Telephone

While the Reference Desk is open, you can contact a Librarian by calling, 408-554-4658. Assisting faculty and students in person at the Reference Desk is our first priority so, if you call while the Desk is open and a Librarian does not answer your call, please leave a message with a callback number and a Librarian will contact you shortly.

  3. E-Mail

You can send a question to the Reference Desk by e-mail. If you send your e-mail while the Desk is open, it will be answered shortly. If you send e-mail while the Desk is closed, your e-mail will be answered when the Desk next opens. To e-mail a question to the Desk, use our online form.

  4. Contact the Business Subject Specialist

My name is Anthony Raymond. My office hours vary each quarter, but normally I work Monday through Friday and at least one evening, i.e., until 9 p.m., each week. Please feel free to drop by my office anytime. If I am in, I will be happy to assist you. If I am out of the office, call and leave a voice-mail message at 408-554-5433, or e-mail me at araymond@scu.edu. I will get back to you as soon as possible, normally within one business day. If you require my assistance on a weekend, please give me a week's notice. My office is located in the basement of Orradre Library, just off the main stairway landing.

  5. Online Reference

A Reference Librarian can be contacted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by selecting the Online Librarian option under the Ask A Librarian service. This service differs from e-mail in that it is real-time and you are conversing with a 'live' Librarian. This free service is provided by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. Depending on what time you access the service, you may be assisted by an SCU Librarian or you may be assisted by a Librarian from some other institution - anywhere from Georgetown University in Washington D.C. to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Non-SCU Librarians are, of course, qualified to assist you, and will do so using SCU databases. This is a perfect service for when you need immediate assistance while doing research at home or at work and the Reference Desk is closed.

Interlibrary Loan / Document Delivery

If you locate books or journal articles not available at SCU, we can obtain them for you free of charge, usually within 3 days. More information is available on the BroncoXpress Interlibary Loan / Document Delivery pages.

Library Computer Workstations

Orradre Library computer workstations are intended for research purposes and do not support word processing, spread sheets, PowerPoint, etc. The workstations in the Student Technology Services Computer Labs support all of these applications and many more. STS Computer Lab locations and hours can be found on the Student Technology Services website.

ERes

Electronic Reserves, allows you to access course syllabi, assigned readings and other course specific documents. Your professors will inform you if you are required to access ERes for a particular course and, if so, will give you the password. You can access ERes from any computer connected to the Internet.

OSCAR - Library Catalog

Orradre Library houses a collection of some 750,000 books and 3,500 journal, magazine and newspapers. The online catalog, OSCAR, is normally the best place to start your research. OSCAR can be used to locate materials in the Library by searching title, author, keyword or subject. OSCAR can be accessed from any computer connected to the Internet.

Searching in OSCAR will show you what books and journals we have in Orradre Library. However, to search for individual journal articles you will need to access the print and electronic journal indexes.

E-Books

Through OSCAR you have access to hundreds of e-books, including all areas of economics and business, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Library maintains an E-Books page describing what collections are available, how to search them and how to acces them

Journals, Magazines & Newspapers

The Library subscribes to hundreds of business journals in both print and electronic formats. Current issues are available individually and older issues are bound together by year. The Library also has a large collection of documents on microform, including microfiche, microfilm and ultrafiche. Print journals, newspapers and magazines are kept in the Periodicals Room on the 2nd floor of Orradre Library. In addition to hundreds of print subscriptions, you also have access to thousands of electronic business journals accessible via the Internet. Many of these electronic journals are 'fulltext' and can be read and printed from any computer connected to the Internet.

To find out if you have access through the Library to a particular journal, magazine or newspaper, go to the Library homepage and look under Electronic Resources.

Databases

Orradre Library subscribes to dozens of online databases in all subject areas, including over 40 specialized business databases that will serve as your primary research resources. These databases are accessible from any computer connected to the Internet.

If you are not familiar with a database, it is worth your time to read the description under its link and to take a look at the help menu in the database itself. When accessing databases from off campus, you will be asked to login by entering your name as it appears on your ACCESS Card, and the 14 digit barcode number on the back of your ACCESS Card. If you experience difficulties using or accessing databases from off-campus, please contact the Reference Desk or me.

Government Documents

Orradre Library houses an extensive U.S. Federal Depository Collection containing a variety of government documents, data and statistics useful in all areas of research. Many government documents and statistics, e.g., 2000 Census Data, are available via the Internet. The Government Documents staff maintain a list of links to these resources.

For assistance with accessing government documents in print or online, please go to the Government Documents Collection located on the 2nd floor of the Library next to the Computer Lab. The telephone number is 408-554-5385. George Carlson, Government Documents Librarian, (gcarlson@scu.edu) and Christa Bailey (cbailey@scu.edu) will be happy to assist you with your research.
