To find books available in the library, use OSCAR the online catalog

Sometimes you may have difficulties finding books on a particular topic because you don't use the right subject headings or keywords when you search the online catalog. Especially with topics related to gay and lesbian studies,there is a great variety of words you can use. Here are some examples of the subject headings used in Oscar. You can also try your own keywords to describe what you re looking for.

Finding Journal and Magazine Articles

To find articles from journals and magazines on Gay and Lesbian issues, you must look into a variety of databases. The best ones would be the following:

LGBT Life with Full-Text
GLBT provides access to the world's literature regarding Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender issues. This database contains indexing and abstracts for more than 80 GLBT-specific core periodicals as well as hundreds of other select titles in various disciplines. Also includes the full text of 50 of the most significant GLBT journals and magazines.

Alternative Press Index
Indexes over 250 alternative, radical and left periodicals, newspapers and magazines covering cultural, economic, political and social change. 1991 to present. Updated quarterly.

Social Sciences Full-text Indexes 544 periodicals in sociology, anthropology, geography, economics, political science and law. Full-text available for 175 of those periodicals. 1983 to date.

Sociological Abstracts
This database is a primary resource for accessing the latest research in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. The database draws information from an international selection of over 2,600 journals and other serials publications, plus conference papers, books, and dissertations. 1963 to present.

Women's Resources International
The ultimate women's studies resource! Includes over 219,000 records drawn from a variety of essential women's studies databases. 1972-present.

Contemporary Women's Issues
Provides access to global information on women from journals, newsletters, research reports, etc. 1992 to date.

Ethnic NewsWatch
A comprehensive full-text database of the newspapers, magazines and journals of the ethnic, minority and native press, with archival material back to 1985.

You can also try the more general databases, OmniFile, and Academic Search Elite, which have the advantage of including many full-text articles.
