Paul in Dublin

Wednesday, Jul. 14, 2010

I first got to meet Paul about 12 years ago in his work with IES, but got to know him so much better when he flew over to Dublin to help me set up a new programme here. On his arrival, his vibrancy, humility and intelligence were instantly apparent, coupled with a real humility. Whether speaking to University Presidents or 19 year-old students his demeanour was the same - good-humoured, open, receptive and compassionate. I warmed to him at once, and knew that he would be of great help, which indeed proved to be the case. He opened doors that I could not have entered, bestowed advice discreetly and entirely without ego, and in the evenings was "good craic" over a glass of wine. The perfect mentor. Although I have not seen him for some time, it is a measure of the man that I felt such a deep pang of sadness to hear that he had gone. As with all those who give out such light, it seemed, not just upsetting, but fundamentally wrong.
