(Re)Writing the Narrative Provides a Platform to Discuss Social Narratives
de Saisset Museum opens fall exhibit
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 26, 2017—The de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University will present (Re)Writing the Narrative, an exhibition on view Sept. 29–Dec. 1, 2017. The exhibition offers a platform to consider the ways in which art can help call into question social narratives.
Spanning multiple mediums, the exhibition features pieces from the museum’s permanent collection as well as works on loan from private collections to explore how artists can create new understandings of our values and societal structures, using humor, abstraction, and, at times, pointed commentary. The artworks in this exhibition include paintings, photographs, prints, and video. They address diverse topics ranging from oppression to commercialism, from expectations fostered by fairytales to specific historical events. Some artists directly target the Western art historical canon, others comment on current events happening in our politics today.
This exhibition includes works by Ana Teresa Fernández, Andy Warhol, Carrie Mae Weems, Chris Hardy, Deborah Oropallo, Evri Kwong, Hung Liu, Kathy Aoki, Masami Teraoka, and William Hogarth.
A public reception for the exhibition will be held on Thursday, Sept. 28, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m at the de Saisset Museum. This event is free and open to the public. Also on view (and opening that same night) will be the exhibition Michael Mazur’s L’Inferno di Dante.
About the de Saisset Museum
The de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University is the South Bay’s free museum of art and history. The museum was founded adjacent to the Mission Santa Clara de Asís on the Santa Clara University campus in 1955 and is one of only three museums in the South Bay accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
