Professor's Film Makes Bay Area TV Debut

Communications professor Mike Whalen’s award-winning documentary “A Question of Habit” will air on KQED Monday, July 30. Narrated by Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon, the film explores popular culture’s fascination with all things “nun” and dives into the real stories behind the women religious in the United States. Whalen hopes the broadcast will help more people realize important roles nuns played in the building of democracy in the U.S.

“Audiences love the film. Nuns really love it. There hasn't been a screening yet where somebody doesn't come up to me afterward and tells me how important nuns were in their life,” says Whalen. Whalen was inspired to pursue his passion for filmmaking by his aunt who is a presentation nun. He considers her a role model.

“My aunt loves it. I think it makes her proud knowing that I have honored her, and her vocation, with this film,” Whalen recently told the Accolade. You can watch the documentary on KQED Monday Night at 10 pm.
