The freshman students moved into their dorms on Sept. 17, while more than 400 upperclassmen moved into the university’s first eco-friendly student housing community, University Villas. Read more about the amenities and features in the building.
The 2011-12 academic year is the 50th anniversary since SCU began enrolling women. In the fall of 1961, SCU became the first coeducational Catholic university in California and enrolled 84 women: 63 freshmen, 15 sophomores, five juniors, and one senior. Their time on campus was a stark contrast from what campus life is like today. Back then, women weren’t allowed to sunbathe, play games in the campus gardens, or wear shorts and pants. They were required to follow a long list of strict rules or risk being disciplined or expelled. See more rules and regulations from 1961.
This an exciting time for students, faculty, and staff, as they mark the 100th anniversary of SCU’s School of Engineering. A series of celebrations and thought-provoking events will have industry leaders such as Intel’s President and CEO Paul Otellini and Apple’s Co-founder Steve Wozniak on campus. Read more about the School of Engineering’s centennial celebrations.
