SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 3, 2011—College students are putting the finishing touches on their resumes, picking out their professional attire, and practicing making their elevator pitch to recruiters from some of the top Silicon Valley companies who will be at Santa Clara University for the annual fall career fair on Oct. 5 from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Malley Fitness and Recreation Center (www.scu.edu/map).

 

SCU is seeing an uptick in the number of employers returning to campus, after a drop during the recession.

“Employment for the class of 2012 is looking good. The number of employers attending the fall career fair is back at pre-recession levels. Recruitment for new graduates is not reflecting the doom and gloom prospects of the national economic forecasts,” says Elspeth Rossetti, director of Santa Clara University’s Career Center. “The Valley’s strength continues to be driven by the tech sector. Computer and electrical engineers are in demand, but companies are also looking for finance, marketing, and communication majors. Graduates savvy in social media and marketing are also in demand.”

 

While Rossetti and her staff are reminding seniors to have their resumes ready, they’re also emphasizing the use of Linkedin and recommending that students have their profiles posted. Rossetti says employers are using the social networking tool to sift through thousands of profiles to find the right hire.

 

“The Career Center created a profile for Santa Clara University’s mascot Bucky the Bronco to show students an example of a strong Linkedin profile. Two employers actually emailed Bucky, offering him an interview,” says Rossetti.

 

Students, faculty, staff, and representatives from select companies will be available for media interviews. A list of employers who are scheduled to be at the career fair is below.
