New Pat Malley Fitness and Recreation Center opens for regular 102-hour weekly schedule
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 20, 1999 – When the new $8.8 million Pat Malley Fitness and Recreation Center first opened its doors on Sept. 15, five days before the fall quarter began, 100 students, faculty and staff walked through its turnstiles in the first hour.
The daily attendance of SCU exercise fanatics and the not-so-fanatic at the shiny new 44,000-square-foot fitness center will increase today, when the daily hours double on Monday-Thursdays, and expand on other days, including weekends.
The Malley Center, featuring $400,000 in state-of-the-art fitness equipment, a giant gym and spacious weight and locker rooms next to a repaired Leavey swimming pool, opened at 6:30 a.m. today, beginning its regular 102-hour weekly schedule on schedule, the same day that fall quarter classes began.
The new hours are:
Monday-Thursday: 6:30 a.m.-10:30 p.m.
Friday: 6:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Saturday: 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Sunday: 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 p.m.
The Malley Center will be open during some breaks and holidays on a limited basis.
The Malley Center, named after the late famed SCU football coach Pat Malley, is free of charge to all SCU students, faculty and staff. SCU athletic teams will have priority for use of Leavey Activities Center and Toso Pavilion.
SCU Access cards are swiped at a Malley Center turnstile for easy entrance. Spouses and children also are admitted free of charge. Guests are allowed with a $5 daily fee. SCU alumni may purchase fitness memberships for $150 per quarter, $400 per year. The building is fully handicapped-accessible, including a new ramp to the Leavey swimming pool from the locker rooms.
A limited number of locked lockers is available for a $40 annual fee, which includes towel service. There are unlocked day-use lockers, and separate faculty-staff locker areas. The Malley Center charges a $5 fee for annual towel service alone.
The new SCU fitness and recreation director, Mark Harriman, oversees activities at the Malley Center, as well as the athletic fields, Tennis Center and the Leavey Activities Center, including the swimming pool. SCU Wellness programs will be coordinated at the Malley Center by Laurie Lang, SCU health educator.
