Santa Clara University retains #2 place in U.S. News annual rankings

Friday, Aug. 19, 2005

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Aug. 19, 2005--For the 16th year in a row, Santa Clara University was ranked second overall among 124 master's universities in the West by the U.S. News & World Report. SCU's average undergraduate graduation rate of 83 percent was the third highest in the nation among the 572 national master's level universities.

This year's rankings include, for the first time, listings for undergraduate engineering programs at colleges and universities where the highest degree offered is a bachelor's or master's of science. SCU's undergraduate School of Engineering ranked 14th nationally.

In its annual ranking, "America's Best Colleges 2006," the magazine compared SCU to similar comprehensive universities that offer a range of undergraduate programs and master's degrees, but few doctoral programs. The Western region includes colleges and universities from Colorado to the West Coast, including Texas.

Additional highlights from the 2006 compilation:

  • SCU's average graduation rate also was the highest in its region and was up a percent from last year's measurement.
  • As it did last year, SCU had the highest average freshman retention rate in the Western region, at 92 percent.
  • SCU had the second highest peer assessment score in the region at 4.1 (of a possible 5.0), up slightly from last year.
  • SCU's residential learning community model for residence life and shared learning was again noted by U.S. News as a program college-bound students and their parents should consider.
  • SCU is listed 12th in the "great schools at a great price" regional category.

The magazine's rankings relied on: academic reputation, graduation rates, class size, percent of full-time faculty, student/faculty ratios, retention of students, student test scores and grades, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving. The "America's Best Colleges" rankings are on the U.S. News web site,
