Soccer teams battle in NCAA tournaments

Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001

SANTA CLARA, Calif.-- Nov.21, 2001 -- The Santa Clara University soccer teams look to continue one of the most successful fall seasons in school history this weekend as they both will be participating in NCAA Tournament matches in the South Bay.

The men play Cal at Stanford on Friday, Nov.23, and the women play Dartmouth at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 24.

The Bronco men won the West Coast Conference championship last week with a thrilling 1-0 victory at Loyola Marymount, giving Santa Clara the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Head Coach Mitch Murray's team will face the University of California, Berkeley in the first round of the tournament on Friday at 4 p.m. at New Maloney Field on the campus of Stanford University. With a win over the Golden Bears, the Broncos will play the Stanford Cardinal in a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.

"Cal has a strong team and we certainly are not taking them lightly," said Murray. "Our team fought hard to win the West Coast Conference and I am confident they will continue to work hard to advance in the NCAA Tournament.

"The support from our community this season has been great and we will need it more than ever this weekend in our NCAA Tournament matches at Stanford."

The Bronco women are ranked second in the nation and won its first two NCAA Tournament matches last weekend in Champaign, Ill. Jerry Smith's team defeated Evansville and Syracuse to advance to the third round match scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. against Dartmouth at Buck Shaw Stadium.

With a win over Dartmouth, the Bronco women will play either Virginia or Cincinnati the weekend of Dec.1 in the regional finals for a chance to advance to the College Cup national semifinals. Santa Clara has played in four of the last five College Cup events, which is the soccer equivalent to the Final Four. This year's College Cup is scheduled for Dec. 7 and 9 in Dallas, Texas.

"Dartmouth has an outstanding defensive squad," said Smith, who's Broncos are ranked second in the nation in scoring with 3.37 goals per game. "We are a team with a bull's-eye on our back and our opponents always give us their best shot. We will need as much support from our home crowd as possible to give us a chance to win the national championship."

In other action, the 18th-ranked Bronco volleyball team will play its final regular-season match of the season Friday at 7 p.m. against Idaho at the Leavey Center. The Bronco volleyball team will learn its postseason assignment Monday at noon when the NCAA announces the pairings for its national tournament.
