Outgoing President Paul L. Locatelli, S.J. appointed Chancellor of SCU

Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 25 -- Following the approval of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees of Santa Clara University, Michael Engh, S.J., president-elect of Santa Clara University, announced today his appointment of outgoing University President Paul L. Locatelli, S.J., as Chancellor of the University.

The appointment represents the first time SCU has had a chancellor since 1988. Although at some institutions the role of chancellor is akin to the role of university president, at Jesuit universities and colleges, the title of chancellor is generally given to outgoing presidents who will remain involved to some degree with their universities. They typically provide support and relationship-building directly to the Office of the President.

"I am honored and grateful that Fr. Locatelli has accepted my offer of this position to help continue to advance the vision and mission of Santa Clara University," Engh said in his announcement to the University community.

Locatelli is stepping down in January after 20 years as president of SCU to take on an expanded role in Rome as Secretary of Higher Education for the Society of Jesus.

After a working sabbatical during the coming year to give him time to focus on his new role, Locatelli's primary responsibilities as SCU's chancellor will include advancing Santa Clara's global initiatives, especially within the worldwide network of Jesuit universities; continuing to foster relationships with designated donors and friends of Santa Clara; and assisting Engh with external relationships in the Silicon Valley.

"These responsibilities will take advantage of some of Fr. Locatelli's greatest gifts and talents while at the same time providing helpful support to me as President," said Engh.

In responding to the appointment, Locatelli said, "I am happy to accept the position of University Chancellor from Fr. Michael Engh, S.J. I want to thank Fr. Engh and I look forward to working with him in continuing to advance the quality and distinctiveness of Santa Clara as a Catholic, Jesuit university."
