Santa Clara University Law Students to Hold Forum Oct. 8 as a Call for Young Adults Participation in Health Care DebateThursday, Oct. 1, 2009SANTA CLARA, CA, Sept. 30, 2009 - Young adults make up one of the largest populations of uninsured Americans, yet many university students feel detached from the health-care reform debate currently underway in Washington, D.C. Hoping to change that, two Santa Clara University law students have organized a forum on how the health care system impacts young adults, and how reform could help or hurt them. The nonpartisan forum HEALTH CARE REFORM: Have 20-Somethings Been Left Behind? will take place October 8, 2009, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. in the California Mission Room, Benson Memorial Center, Santa Clara University. The forum will feature a student panel as well as an expert question-and-answer session, with pro-reform and insurance industry participants, moderated by Becca King Reed of KTEH. The focus of the event will be the all-too-common gap in college and post-college health-care coverage, and what federal reform could mean to young adults. Student panelists will share experiences about being uninsured, under-covered and fearful of exclusion from insurance coverage due to pre-existing conditions. Another student panelist, an insured pre-med student, will share her perspective on reform as she anticipates her career in the medical industry. At the conclusion of the event, resource materials will be provided so young adults can continue to learn about, and engage in, the health-care reform debate. The event is free and open to the public. The forum was created by law students Jamie Andrzejewski and Mary Ann Nguyen with support from Santa Clara University School of Law and the National Coalition on Health Care. Additional event sponsors include the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, the Health Care Law Society and many student organizations at Santa Clara University.
