What has been your favorite class at SCU and why?
So far, my favorite class has been the Community Health Education class that I took winter quarter.  In this class, we discussed issues such as school violence and bullying, death and grief, disease and illness, mental health, and other issues that we liberal studies students will have to face as teachers. Not only was our teacher not afraid to bring the issues close to home, but she went out of her way to bring in many guest speakers. We had a speaker talk to us about child abuse and mandated reporting, a speaker talk about her life experiences with AIDS, and another speaker discuss with us the importance of mental well being. The class opened my eyes to issues around me and expanded my horizons to a whole new level. I feel that it truly helped me to think more about my future and to consider all of the things that are in store for me in the future.

What is your favorite activity to do at SCU?
My favorite activity to do at SCU is to volunteer through the organization SCCAP.  Although I do not volunteer directly on campus, SCCAP helps me find places to volunteer and connects me to those that I volunteer with. Through SCCAP, I can venture into the area surrounding Santa Clara and further my knowledge about social justice issues, as well as do my part as a member of this community. SCCAP gives me opportunities to gain experience in my future job field and to work with everyone from the elderly to preschoolers. Because of SCCAP, volunteering has become my favorite pastime.

What advice would you give to the Class of 2012?
My greatest advice for the Class of 2012 would be to get as involved as possible early on in the year.  When I came to Santa Clara, I joined many clubs that caught my interest, as I tried to learn as much as possible about what was going on around me. Getting involved early helped to figure out my passions, and also helped me to meet a great deal of different people. There are many different things going on around campus, and I found it extremely easy to find something that I was interested in and wanted to spend my time doing. Finding these passions early on has truly helped me to direct my energy towards the bigger picture in life.

Why do you love SCU?
I love SCU for so many reasons. From the moment I stepped onto the campus as a senior in high school, I knew that this was the place I wanted to spend the next four years of my life.  The campus is beautiful year round, and the atmosphere is inviting. Everyone that I have met during my first year has been extremely nice and helpful. I also love how Santa Clara makes the transition from high school to college so easy. SCU presented so many opportunities for me to learn about the world around me, to meet my peers, and to do good for others within my first quarter of college. I love waking up, walking outside and knowing how blessed I am to call myself an SCU student.
