2008 Summer Orientation Common Reading
| Common Reading: Breaking Through by Francisco Jiménez. In preparation for Orientation, we ask all students to read a common text. During Summer Orientation, you will discuss this book with other students in your Residential Learning Community. You should read the text and be prepared to discuss it when you arrive. This year’s text is Breaking Through by Francisco Jiménez, an autobiographical account of an immigrant boy’s struggle with poverty and prejudice and of the path that brought him to Santa Clara University as a student. Professor Jiménez is the Fay Boyle Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures. In November 2002, he was honored as one of four U.S. Professors of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Breaking Through (Houghton Mifflin Co., ISBN: 0618342486, list price $6.95) is readily available in bookstores or may be ordered through www.barnesandnoble.com; shipping from the online bookstore is currently estimated within 24 hours.
