Important Student Records Information

At Santa Clara University, each student is placed at the forefront of his or her educational experience. While many of the admissions and financial decisions associated with college are made in partnership with parents, it is the expectation of the University that the student will begin to take primary responsibility of his or her educational experience beginning with Orientation. The University is committed to educating students who are competent, conscientious, and compassionate. This goal is well-served when students take responsibility for managing their own records – personal, academic, and financial.

The University’s philosophy is underscored by important federal Laws that prohibit the disclosure of student information to any outside parties, including parents. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) protect the confidentiality of student records. For outside parties to gain access, the student must give written consent to the University permitting such access. During Orientation, students will learn more about their FERPA rights and associated responsibilities. They will be given an opportunity to provide access to outside parties for certain records. For more information, please visit the FERPA website (www.scu.edu/ferpa).

Take a moment to read a letter from the Provost regarding FERPA.
