New Student Orientation

Summer Reading 2012

acts-of-faithBefore your visit, we ask all students to read a common text. You should be prepared to discuss the book with other students in your Residential Learning Community during orientation.

This year’s text is Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation by well-known author Eboo Patel. In Acts of Faith, Patel recounts the story of learning to cherish his own Muslim faith and identity while also discovering the importance and power of interfaith dialogue. He describes ways in which his experiences as an undergraduate shaped his understanding of identity, diversity, and community, and along the way touches on many themes that we at Santa Clara hold deeply important. Patel’s story is insightful, uplifting, and inspirational. You will enjoy it!

Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation (Beacon Press, ISBN-10: 0807077267, ISBN-13: 978-0807077269) is available in bookstores and online. We encourage you to obtain your copy as soon as possible. If you have difficulty obtaining the text or have other questions about it, please contact the Office of New Student Programs at orientation@scu.edu or 408-551-1995.
