Mare Island
Join OLLI for a destination learning program to scenic Mare Island (Solano County), one of the 20 islands in San Francisco Bay. Mare island is rich in history: In 1845 the Mare Island shipyard was founded by David Farragut and the location served an important role in West Coast naval history until 1996, when the Navy closed the yard. At its peak during WWII the shipyard population reached 46,000. The island contains buildings that are on the U.S. National Register Historic Places as well as an area that has been designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark District. There will be a comprehensive docent-guided tour that includes Admiral's Mansion, Officer's Row (Quarters A--Colonial Revival mansions), St. Peter's Chapel (1901) with its renowned Tiffany stained glass windows, the Artifacts Museum, and the dry docks. Lunch is included (served in the period rooms of one of the Officer's mansions) and there will be time on your own to explore. Transportation to and from Mare island will be provided by bus from Santa Clara University.

Destination Learning trips include a pre-trip Enrichment Lecture which will take place on the SCU campus. Prior to the mare Island trip, Art Historian and SCU Professor Andrea Pappas will speak on "Louis Comfort Tiffany in Context." This lecture will inform and illuminate aspects of the attractions included in our Mare Island tour.

Don't miss SCU OLLI's exciting first Destination Learning program.
