Letter to the Santa Clara Community from Mike Markkula, Chairman, Board of Trustees

September 17, 2008

Dear Santa Clara University faculty, staff, students, administrators, and friends,

It is my privilege to inform you that today the Board of Trustees elected Michael Engh, S.J., as the 28th President of Santa Clara University. Fr. Engh is a distinguished historian and currently Dean of the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. He will take office in January 2009.

Fr. Engh brings to Santa Clara an outstanding record as a scholar, teacher, historian, and administrator. He has made significant academic contributions in his career, and understands the potential of Jesuit institutions to advance student learning and artistic expression, faculty scholarship, and social justice.

Fr. Engh emerged from a field of candidates as the best person to lead Santa Clara; I am confident that he will lead Santa Clara, as a Catholic, Jesuit university, to a new level of academic excellence. He possesses a rare blend of vision, compassion, and a deep understanding of Jesuit higher education that will serve students, faculty, staff and the broader Silicon Valley community very well.

Fr. Engh will succeed Fr. Paul Locatelli.

Fr. Locatelli continues as president of the University until December 31, 2008.

On behalf of the University’s Board of Trustees and the entire Santa Clara community, I would like to thank Paul for his service to Santa Clara over the past 20 years. On his watch we have witnessed his inspiring dedication, humanity, and passion for peace and justice. The tremendous progress made at Santa Clara University in the last two decades is a testimony to his visionary leadership. He has been a successful administrator, an inspiring educator, and a loyal friend. Please join the Board of Trustees in wishing Paul the very best in his capacity as Secretary of Higher Education for the Society of Jesus worldwide.

On behalf of the University’s Board of Trustees, I would also like to thank the members of the Search Committee for their time and careful deliberation.

Please join the Board of Trustees in welcoming Fr. Michael Engh to the Santa Clara community.

Personal Regards,

A.C. “Mike” Markkula, Jr.
Chair, Santa Clara University Board of Trustees
