Mike Markkula's letter to the Santa Clara Community
March 14, 2008
Dear Santa Clara University faculty, staff, students, administrators, and friends.
This morning President Paul Locatelli, S.J. told the Board of Trustees that his responsibilities as Secretary of Higher Education are to be greatly expanded. Our congratulations go out to Paul, as this recognizes his many accomplishments and contributions over the 20 years that he has been our president. No one deserves this recognition more.
He also said that this expanded role would require at least 75 percent of his time at some point in the near future. As a consequence of this, he has instructed the Board of Trustees to begin the process of finding a replacement for him. Impossible! We will, however, begin the search for a new President.
This is truly an honor for Paul, and for Santa Clara, and all that he has accomplished in his tenure on campus.
In the 20 years Paul has been at SCU, we have witnessed his inspiring dedication, humanity, and passion for peace and justice. He has been a successful administrator, an inspiring educator, and a loyal friend.
As Chairman of the Board of Trustees, I would like to assure the SCU community that we will do all we can to find a new President who will serve the University with the same energy, enthusiasm, dedication, and foresight. We anticipate a transition in leadership will occur during the 2008-09 academic year, with Paul remaining at SCU through the transition.
Our new President will be selected by the University Board of Trustees, who will appoint a search committee to help identify and assess candidates for the President’s position. The committee of 7 to 11 members will be comprised of trustees, faculty, administrators, and Jesuits. The committee will conduct a targeted search of Jesuits with outstanding educational backgrounds and previous work experience, knowledge, motivation, and interpersonal skills. The search committee will recommend candidates to the Board, which will interview the applicants and make the final decision.
Our selection process will involve a thoughtful and careful screening of candidates from throughout the nation, and will rely heavily on input from a broad base of SCU community representatives.
Please join the Board of Trustees in wishing Fr. Locatelli the very best in his new duties, and watch for information about a community-wide celebration in his honor later this year.
A.C. Mike Markkula, Jr.
