UPC End-of-Year Meeting
On May 22, we held the end-of-year UPC meeting, at which representatives from the University Policy Committees, Faculty Senate, Staff Senate and other committees reported on their activities of the past year. So that the University community is apprised of the extensive work accomplished by each group, the summary reports are posted as follows:
Class of 2014 Student Awards
Congratulations to the members of the Class of 2014 selected to receive University awards. It is my pleasure to acknowledge the following students for their contributions to the University community and beyond.
At Undergraduate Commencement on Saturday, June 14, we shall recognize five exemplary students for their achievements, service to others and contributions to the life of the University. John Bird (environmental science) will receive the Nobili Medal and Alexandra Sibole (bioengineering) will receive the St. Clare Medal; the Peter Hans Kolvenbach, S.J. Award will go to Nicholas Leasure (economics) and Rosa Segura (biology); and the 2014 Valedictorian will be Ivan Krayniy (accounting).
At the Senior Toast to the Class of 2014 held on May 29, several students received the Richard J. Riordan Award in recognition of their outstanding contributions to service through their work with the marginalized and underserved populations outside of the University community: Edwin Cabrera (communication), Laura Aislinn Diaz (psychology), Laura Ornelas (sociology), Claire Kunkle (mechanical engineering), and Celia Trujillo (religious studies).
Student Life Awards in recognition of contributions to improving the overall quality of life in the University community went to John Cabri (biology), Jared Hara (bioengineering), Tennyson Jones (theater), Judith Martinez (philosophy), Emily Robinson (biochemistry), and Dominique Troy (communication).
Denise Castillo Chavez (sociology) received the Student Inclusive Excellence Award for her commitment to enhancing an inclusive environment on campus.
This year’s recipients of the 2014 Alumni Association Board of Directors’ Service Award are Claude Donnelly (English) and Rosa Segura (biology).

Board of Trustees Meeting Held on June 6, 2014
The Board of Trustees met last Friday and covered a full agenda. Highlights of the meeting included the election of new trustees and officers, approval of recommended revisions to the Faculty Handbook, and enthusiastic endorsement of the direction of athletics recommended by the President’s Athletics Commission.
At the recommendation of the Trustee Academic Affairs Committee, the full board approved the following changes to the Faculty Handbook. Prior to submission to the trustees, the revisions were recommended by the Faculty Affairs University Polic Committee and endorsed by the Faculty Senate, Provost and President. The approved changes below are the result of a thorough review throughout the governance process:
- Removal of references to six-year limit for faculty on fixed term appointments, adjunct professor ranks, and research professors
- Addition of references to analysis of need and evaluation of adjunct faculty
- Addition of reference to care for a family member as rationale for a leave or a partial leave
- Addition of a new section limiting length of leave
- Addition of new section regarding reduced time appointments of up to four years under certain circumstances
Two new trustees, Matthew E. Carnes, S.J. and Erick Berrelleza, S.J., were elected to fill two Jesuit vacancies on the board. Both are members of the California Province of the Society of Jesus and have connections to the University community. A native of San Carlos, CA, Father Carnes served as a Jesuit-in-Residence in the Santa Clara University residence halls from 2004-2008 and in 2011-2012. He is on the faculty at Georgetown University in the Department of Government, where he has taught since 2009. Mr. Berrelleza is completing his theology studies at Boston College School of Theology and Ministry in preparation for ordination. He has served on special assignment in the President's Office at Santa Clara and has held several local and international postings as a teacher (at Bellarmine Prep, San Jose), minister and researcher in Uruguay, Dominican Republic, and Mexico.
Several trustees were re-elected to the board, including Peggy Bradshaw, Bill Coleman, Paul Gentzkow, Heidi LeBaron Leupp, Bob Smith, John A. Sobrato, John M. Sobrato, and Agnieszka Winkler. Former trustee Regis McKenna was approved as trustee emeritus.
As I mentioned in the State of the University address in February, the President’s Athletics Commission presented me with a set of recommendations regarding intercollegiate athletics at Santa Clara University. At last week’s trustees meeting, John M. Sobrato, trustee and chair of the commission, briefed the board on the commission’s work. The board enthusiastically endorsed the strategies recommended by the Athletics Commission and asked that the administration develop an implementation plan and timetable consistent with the University's Strategic Plan.
In other discussions and reports, Provost Jacobs gave the trustees an update on the Integrated Strategic Plan, and Jim Lyons reported on the Capital Campaign, which is currently in the silent phase. Kirk Syme, chair of the Board of Regents, delivered the report on activities of the Regents; Barbara Molony and James Lai, acting President and President-elect of the Faculty Senate Council, summarized activities of the Faculty Senate; and Judith Martinez gave a report on Associated Student Government. Following the meeting, coaches and staff from Athletics, along with student leaders, joined the trustees for lunch.
UPC End-of-Year Meeting
Every spring, the current and incoming chairs of governance groups and other committees, presidents of the Staff Senate and the Faculty Senate, members of the University Coordinating Committee, and administrators who have roles in the governance process, gather for a reflection on the work of University governance accomplished during the academic year. The meeting for this year is scheduled for May 22. This will be an opportunity for each group to report on its activities for the year and to discuss accomplishments and challenges. Following the meeting, the annual summary report that includes the reports of the various groups will be posted on the Governance Web site.
