Dear Members of the Santa Clara University Community,

I invite you to celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit on Wednesday, October 3, 2012, at 12:00 pm. in the Mission Church. The Mass of the Holy Spirit is a centuries-old tradition in Jesuit colleges and universities. It is our community-wide celebration of the new academic year when we call on the Spirit of God to inspire all our works, activities and studies. This is a unique opportunity for all groups within the Santa Clara community to gather as one academic family seeking wisdom and truth.

Following the Mass all are invited to a picnic lunch on the St. Ignatius Lawn.

To enable the campus community to attend the Mass, classes will not meet between 11:45 a.m. and 1:15 p.m.on October 3. Classes that usually meet from 11:45 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. will be canceled. Classes scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. will instead begin at 1:15 p.m. Please note that classes in the School of Law and the Jesuit School of Theology will meet as scheduled and will not be canceled.

Wishing you many blessings of the Holy Spirit as together we embark on this new year,

    Michael E. Engh, S.J.
    President

Dear Members of the Santa Clara University Community,

Tuesday, July 31, marks the feast day of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit Order. As is our tradition at Santa Clara, we shall celebrate the feast day with a liturgy at 11:30 a.m. in the Mission Church, followed immediately with a picnic lunch on the St. Ignatius Lawn between Kenna and Walsh Halls.

Ignatius' unique gift to the Society of Jesus and to the Church was his spirituality that invites women and men to integrate learning into a life of faith. Through education, he sought to build better communities for the greater glory of God, with a mission of love, justice and a special concern for the poor, the sick and the hungry. My hope is that our prayer on his feast day lead us to see God, our world, our work, and ourselves in a new way.

Please mark you calendars to gather together on Tuesday, July 31 and celebrate our Ignatian roots.

    Sincerely,

    Michael E. Engh, S.J.
    President
